I went to the auction number that he had in his description and it was definitely in better shape in that photo. It is very possible that whatever company shipped the deck could be at fault. We've all seen the video of the UPS workers throwing packages into bins. I'm not saying that the water damage wasn't there to begin with, but he said it was damaged during shipping. If they dropped it hard enought to bend and distort the top panel that bad who KNOWS where they dropped it or left it sit. I would not be so quick to blame the seller yet. The buyers words were quote "In addition, it was smashed severely during shipping." That's where I would start before I start ruining someones reputation. I would start checking with the shipping company. The guy guaranteed it not to be DOA on arrival. I don't think we have the whole story. I have over 100 hundred transactions on ebay and I have 100% feedback and I don't think the first seller was trying to pull a fast one. Compare the pics. Copy and paste the item number and look. Just my thought.

Of course the shipping company handled it roughly, whether it'd be UPS, Fedex, USPS or whatever. I know what goes on in those shipping fascilities, automated and manual and I can tell you no amount of bubble wrap or "typical" packing will protect heavier electronics. My own research indicates that at least half of those types of items shipped sustain damage. It's pretty rare to have someone pack something properly, especially those nice decks we oft talk about. I know you will disagree but I would bet anything the seller didn't pack sufficiently.

Bottom line: most sellers don't know how to properly pack heavier electronics.

Water issues aside, after examining the unit, the shipping damage correlates nicely with the lack of heavy duty (and substantial) reinforcement on sides of the box something which would absorb shocks and keep everything intact.

I see bubble wrap around the deck. That's a joke.

...just make sure you don't rely on luck but rather instruct the seller on proper packaging. ;)
I think I need some help on instructing the seller. What are some key words to throw at them so I can reduce the chances of a shipping mishap? Forgive me for being naive, but I just don't know what proper packing consists of in this instance.

What I would do and what I would ask the seller to do are two different things. You'd have to balance reasonable instructions vs getting the recorder packed sufficiently well.

First I'd tell the seller to place the recorder in a plastic bag. I'd then ask him to get a strong oversized double walled box (or use a double box method) and place no less than 4 inches of thick styrofoam panels on the bottom and sides of the box. The styro sheets can be bought at Home Depot. He has to make sure the sheets are cut to snuggly fit inside of the box and be sitting very tight on the recorder's side panels, bottom and top (not the face where the reels go). The recorder needs to be in a "vice-grip", for the lack of better term. For the face of the recorder, you'd want to ideally brace it with some styro blocks glued to the top cover or a seperately cut cardboard sheet. The blocks resting on the small of the side panels and perhaps a block between the reels. Failing that, however, a big bag of loose peanuts, placed on top of the entire face would brace it (in the event of the recorder being upside down) but only if they are pretty tightly packed in there so that they can't shift and that the machine won't easily come out of its "nest". At least 4 inches (measured from the tip of the reel spindle) of that peanuts bag (peanuts have to be placed in the bag) with perhaps an inch or two of styro sheet to cap the top (on top of the peanut bag). Make sure the seller VERY CLEARLY labels, with arrows and words: "This side UP" and "Do not drop", "Fragile" etc ....

The above is reasonable, I think, for a typical ebay seller to follow and I consider it as minimal no frills but sufficient packing. The styrofoam will absorb shocks and the corners are also well protected while the recorder is tightly secured. It's not ideal but again I'm balancing what a typical seller will go for and security.

Ideally I'd get it wood crated with similar packaging, thick corner blocks or foam in place.

Damn, it's late, I can't think straight but I hope I gave some suggestions and it makes sense. Sorry for the haphazard writting style. :o

I'd also ask the seller to remove any feet that the recorder sits on etc .....

...also, for whatever it's worth, ask for Fedex shipping.

Thanks for the tips cjacek! I suggested them to the seller and I hope he or she takes heed. B.t.w., that's the most thoughtful packing job I've ever seen in that thread you started on packing do's.

Thank you my friend and DO update us on your recorder. :)

Will do! I'll post some pictures of the packing job and condition of the machine when it gets here. It should be a week or so. I'm exited to use it for my initial drum tracks and bounce mixes. I'm thinking it will be miles ahead of the blackface ADAT I've been bouncing to from my 388. :)

Great! I look forward to this update with picts! :)

Yeah, the 40-4 is a 4 track version of the 'ol mighty 80-8. They're both extremely well built (overbuilt) and would sound excellent and deliver punchy sound not found on lesser models. If all arrives well (and I trust that it will) you really should pay a TEAC / TASCAM authorized tech to bring it to factory specifications.
