Hi all, I have a problem with my old 244. It dos'nt erase properly,I go to punch in an overdub and I can still hear what was recorded before as well as the dub. This happens on all four tracks. Has enyone else experienced such a problem. My machine is very old and I'm thinking of a replacement, but not before Iv'e tried to fix this one.
BTW. I'm new here,so be gentle with me. :)

You're not attempting to record on a Metal bias tape, are you? If so, those tapes can not be completely erased by the 244 or any other model in the line. Only type II, chrome bias tapes should be used like TDK SA or Maxell XLII type formulations.

Otherwise, if the correct tapes are being employed, then I would inspect and clean the heck out of the erase head to make sure there wasn't a film of oxide built up on the heads and blocking the erasure function. Qtips and alcohol.

If after that there is still problems, I might be tempted to suggest getting an estimate on it from a qualified repair shop.

Cheers! :)

Thanks Ghost, I don't use metal tapes and I already had a go with the Qtips. So it looks like a trip to repairland. Not sure it's worth it. Iv'e got my eye on a few lots on ebay.

Replacing it with another one from Ebay,(if we're talking about the same model), may not be an automatic solution to your problem in that you may end up buying a unit has its own set of maintenance issues that you will have to deal with.

I might suggest again to get the estimate on yours first, then your know if its worth the risk to buy someone else's problems.

You might also do a search here on this website for others with a similar problem. Perhaps the search terms; incomplete erasure, or, erase head not working.

Cheers! :)

maybe the heads needs degaussed? If you're gonna replace it, you would probably be better off getting a brand new 424mkIII.
