The linked tune is an our version of a cover of Steal My Kisses. This tune was recorded in my basement with one take on instruments and one take on vocals. We know there are mistakes and we didn't go back over the stuff to fix those mistakes becuase we are only going to take anywhere between 20-30 seconds of each tune on the demo (we did 25 tunes).

I am new to this so I am looking for opinions on the mix. Is it balanced, do the vocals need to be more present, etc.... What are your thoughts.

The vox could come up a bit.I really like the tone of the bass.How'd you get
it?

Thanks for taking the time SheppardB. I kinda wondered if the vocals needed about 1 maybe 1.5 db boost. Sometimes they just don't seem like the most important element in the song and they are supposed be.

My bass was recorded direct using a Behringer DI4000 direct box. I used a bit of compression going in, but no eq or anything. I play a Warwick Corvette standard. I personally love the sound of this particular bass. Punchy lows with a nice low mid growl. The sound is definitively Warwick.
 
the congas/whatever sit kinda strange, probably just need some compression.
if you set the comp right you can also bring out the attack on them more with no eq.

not a big fan of direct guitar (i'm just guessing but thats what it sounds like to me)

if your gonna use the harmonies, id bring them up, if not.....

The instrument mix is good. Plenty of the stuff I want to hear in the right proportions, well except the congas. I agree they sit a little funny. Vocals could come up a bit. I thought I heard some backing vox in the stop. Either bring 'em up or lose them. Over all not bad at all.
 
Good ear there Giraffe! The guitar was direct. I am not a big fan of this either, but we were all in one room with the drummer separated by temporary wall so the guitar amp would have bled pretty heavily into the drums mics and the harmonica mic.

both you and Track Rat caught the bground vocals. I agree that I should use them or lose them. Here's the situation and my thoughts. Tell me wether you think it's a good idea or not. When we did this demo project we did either 24 or 25 tunes in about 25 hours of studio time in my basement. We recorded all the instruments, with a rough guide vocal track over 2 friday/saturday nights(just like a gig). Then the next weekend we did vocals. This tune was recorded fairly late in the process and the background vocalist got a bit sloppy. I was thinking that I might go through the tune and grab the pieces that were recorded well and put them where they need to be and actually use the bground vocals. Am I biting off more than I can chew?
Is this going to sound really funky and make all of my time wasted? Thoughts.

This sounds awesome.

The bass tone is excellent. Like everyone else said, the vocals need to come up a bit. The guitars sound a little too direct.

This was recorded to a click track so I will give it a shot. The harmonies are the same on each chorus so if I can get one good shot from each vocalist I might be able to line them up. Should be interesting and educational.
