Old EV

So... I have this old EV mic that has kind of an RCA44 look to it. It is called a V-2A velocity microphone. I had always thought that velocity mics were ribbons, but I pulled the screen and the little cloth pop filter and it looks like a dynamic mic.

Also, it originally had the wierd EV connector, so years ago I soldered an XLR to it. I wired black to 1, green to 2, and white to 3. Does that seem right?

I'm sure the black wire is ground. I don't know how to tell the difference between the hot and cold leads from the transformer. Does that affect the sound if I get it wrong?
 
So I tested it out. It sounds like it is inside a box... way crappy. Could this be from the wiring?
 
well since no one else is responding I'll let you know what I think...


I think that's a ribbon mic, as the velocity label would imply. I think the ribbon itself is under/behind what looks like the dynamic element. If that's the case, there's a good chance the ribbon is damaged which would explain the poor sound.

Another thing to cosider is that green was often used for ground back in the day (before I was born), so you might have the wires mixed up there. But then again, I could be wrong. Wait for someone else to support or correct what I said.

Either way, food for thought.....

The V-2A is definitely a ribbon mic. Not a particularly stellar one, though.

Perhaps someone might have taken the ribbon and magnet out and installed a moving-coil element long ago?
