Your Mother
I have one and ive been using it for years, with an Art pre amp, its served me very well, But is it what you'd call a good mic? am I missing out on a shockingly better sound from other mics?

I could never tell because, generally what I hear in demo's from these other mics is recorded in a better acoustic environment

If anyone has used this mic or knows about it were to give it an out of 10 score what would you give it?

The 319 is a dam good microphone .....but to have it modified it would be a dam great microphone ..in comparison.

The MK319 is a hard mic to judge, because Oktava's quality control is spotty at best. I've had one for years, and it is a go-to mic, especially for female vocals. I've refused to have it modded, only because- I have better and more expensive mics that don't sound like the Oktava, and I'm afraid the mod would make it into a better mic that doesn't sound like it sounds right now, if that makes sense. There is this, though- I've auditioned two of them side by side, and although they both sounded good, they were totally different. My girlfiend's is bright, almost like a U87ai. Mine is dark and smooth, like an AKG Solid Tube. Both mics are just fine, but you would never guess, in a blind test, that these were the same model.

Are you "missing out" on the better sound of a more expensive mic? Probably. Modding it mostly consists of replacing substandard components, and may involve modification of the body and grill. In the good old days, Oktava used whatever components they could buy cheap, including components from obsolete Soviet military equipment. Will modding it make it better? If it's done well, almost certainly. But I can't tell you if it's really a good mic as is, because they don't all sound the same. Some of them are very good mics, and I don't doubt that some of them suck. I bought mine for $99, and it's among the best $99 I've ever spent on studio gear. Good luck with yours.-Richie

I bought 2 oktava 319s back in 1997 and they still get used daily!

Ref the above poster, these two are very similar sounding, but I guess they were from similar production runs. They were not matched or anything.

In order to keep those two together, I have subsequently (a few weeks ago) bought another and sent it to oktavamod for tweaks. i have had the pleasure of using a PE floating dome 319 oktavamod in the past and it just rocks!! I hope that mine will be just as good as that one when I receive it back. I am sure that it will be!!

The 319 is well useable as stock. I really like its gritty dark flavour. We used them as one of our main vocal mics for years on a lot of different singers and they worked well. I know that the mods will make the new one killer, but am glad i have a pair of the unmodded ones too!

I think they are a great workhorse. I always recommend them. I will let you know about my new modded one when it arrives!
