OK, is this just plain stupid???

looks like you might be better off with just a tighter pattern mic.

Or am I onto something???

I've been doing this bascall cap thing for about a year to help keep the high hat out of the snare mic. I think it works, but I'm not sure how much.

What do you think???

Whatever works, hoss. Innovative and simple!

I noticed that the bill of the hat is lodged in between the head and the hoop. Does this mute the snare at all? How has this worked for you? Are you noticing less bleed? Sorry for all the questions. I won't be back home until Sunday so I can't try it for myself until then.

I thought the concept was valid enough to build a shield and used it for a while. -curved hard plastic on the hat side, lined with 1/2" dense foam on the mic side.
Bottom line though, it only knocked the bleed down a little. Yes it's slightly noticeable but it doesn't solve the problem- if the hat's loud or the snare is wimpy.. well, it's a loud hat and the snare's still wimpy. ;)
Then there's the O/H's further undoing things.

Yes, it is simple. :)

The tip of the hat between the skin and the rim doesn't affect the sound at all.

I think the cap takes away a bit of the highs that get through from the hats. I don't mind a little bleed so it doesn't bother me that it doesn't block out everything. I find that it allows me to add some highs to the snare, if I need to, without affecting the hats as much as if there was nothing acting as a buffer.

I agree. I should point out that I only record myself. This might not work for some drummers depending on their technique, or lack thereof.

I heard Neil Peart taped a PZM to his chest while Rush was recording "Moving Pictures." Crazier stuff has been tried I'm sure.

Bottom line - if it sounds good, it is good.

Figure out how to get highs from the snare without cranking the eq.

I have that figured out. It was just an example of one of the benefits of the cap, though it doesn't really apply to me.

I almost never boost anything. And if I do, I absolutely never "CRANK" frequencies. If anything, I usually end up cutting a little highs off my snare.

I was thinking maybe you could try something a little different next time.

Like a hat made of meat, perhaps?

Perhaps something a little more ... "cultural" then?

15 posts and no reference to myhatbroke? I'm disappointed in you guys.

Hey Rami, I've taken a Dixie Cup, cut a hole in the bottom just big enough for a 57 capsule to fit through, pushed the mic in to be even with the rim of the cup, surrounded the space around the mic with foam, and had good results.

Cool EZ. Worth a try. I once did put foam around the side of a 57 and I thought it muffled it a bit. I might have had it up too high.

The hat isn't broken, nor does it look like a girl. That's why there aren't any references yet.

CAUTION: terrible joke ahead

Does that give the drums more body?

And now for something completely different.

What's the polar pattern on the mic? You should just be able to place it so the HH falls into a null zone.
