OK - I'm an idiot (stupid wiring question)

I've looked around and can't seem to find any kind of info about this stupid question that must be so obvious that I can't believe I don't know.

I've done a few simple wiring jobs on guitars, but nothing extensive. My next project will require extra wire besides just using the lead from the pickup.

What type of wire do I need to buy for wiring inside a guitar? The only thing I could find at all about this is that Stewart Mac sells rolls of 100' or so of wire for $20, which I will NEVER need that much. lol

I assume I can just buy the wire at a hardware store, but the small one down the street had nothing that looked right. What kind (gauge, etc.) of wire do I need?

Use black wire, it's the coolest.

I just wired a a new pickguard with all new parts on my strat. I just went to Radio Shack and bought wire for it, i didn't really look at what kind it was. I guess it was about 16g.

Actaully no question is a stupid question. We all ask questions to know the answer. It's not because we are stupid.

I dont remember the gauges. make sure the wires are not too thin. Also the wires should have better shielding to prevent hum etc.

See if you can open up an old radio or something. It should have plenty of wires. Make sure you solder them good.

I'm in the process of rewiring some pickups in a Mex Strat and a Jay Turser. The leads out of pickups tend to be really a light gauge (like 20 or 24 or lighter). If you use a 20 gauge, that would be more than sufficient.

There are several web sites on how to wire guitars, cut the hum for single coil, etc. - you might just do a google search and see what you find. It seems to be the wiring configuration is more important than the wire itself. Using shielded wire inside the body doesn't appear to be the main priority with these sites.

Thanks for the answers. I ended up with 22 gauge hookup wire from Radio Shack. It seems to work ok.

I've been playing around with the wiring on the current pickups. I think when my Lawrence pups get here I'm going to go back to a straight Tele setup and see how I like that. I ordered new pots, a switch, caps, etc. The old stuff in this beater was beat, and it was cheap to start with.
