Spread the Daf!
......this is another recording from my vaults. I'd say this is almost 30 years old.
Allow me to set the stage.
This was a band I was in with two of my best friends in the world, Butch and Maggie Mizell. The kind of friends that you stay close to even if they move away. I go see them most years.

This was at a gig and the recording is just a couple of Shure mics stuck out in front. So mixing is out the window. Basically, this is exactly how we sounded live.

In this song, Butch is playing the Fender Rhodes, Maggies singing and I'm playing bass. I don't remember who was on drums, that was a revolving position.

Note: I'm playing bass and singing one of the parts. Also, when the two girls sing (The Lickettes) I'm singing one of those parts.

The second one down...The Buzzard Was Their Friend

I don't know what the hell's up with the site. I've got that other bogus thread with nothing on it. So I'm posting here to hopefully get people to choose this one.

Hey, I thought this was cool. The band sounds tight and the vocals are perfect. For two 58s stuck out front, it was a pretty good recording too. You nail those hi parts! Do we have to start calling you Lt. Bobbi? :D

very nice for what it is and how it was recorded............interesting to hear

Hey..... cool!

....Nice bass man! What are you playing there? Nice vocs too, ....very tight and arranged very well. This is an incredibly good recording for just 2 dynamnics out front.

very nice man!!!

Just curious...

But could that Fender Rhodes have been a Wurlitzer. Maybe it's just my old ears but it sounded just like an old Wurlitzer electric I had about 25 years ago.

Dennis

very  tune ... I loved it.

No Wurlitzer. I know the ax you're talking about but Butch definitely had a Rhodes and, in fact, it was one of those models where the piano sat on top of this big old heavy speaker/amp. I hated that thing.
But, you know, the Wurlitzer used reeds like in a harmonica and the Rhodes used tines so maybe that's why there was a similarity to the sound.

And G., I was playing a maple neck precision with a Bartolini pick-up in it. I don't have a clue what amp I was using 'cause back then I traded and swapped equipment almost daily.

Very tight vocals. That shit is hard to pull off live. How did you guys track that and what did you track it to?

cool!

that's some good stuff right there.. other than the crackle, this recording sounds really good to me.. nice tight vocals.. actually everything is really good.. damn.. I was 1 at the time of this recording. :)

good stuff.. great brush sound on the drums too..

When we tracked this, we were playing a gig in a small club. I had a Teac reel-to-reel and I plugged two Shure mics direct into the recorder. the mics were 545's I believe.

We did have nice harmonies. We were all hippies together and the three of us basically did everything together. And anywhere we went; we had a guitar and were singing. We did some Manhatten Transfer, Pointer Sisters, Dan Hicks.....stuff with a lot of vocals 'cause our instrumentation was fairly limited and we used the vocals to fill it up. I dearly love those two. They're married with grandchildren and are ranchers in Texas.

Hey man,

.......really cool bass sound for this stuff. You got a really convincing string bass tone out of that P....

......God Bless Leo, .......(sniff).

Nice work man!

Hello Sir,

Your "from the vault" songs are always a rewarding treat!! Had some nice ass harmony going on......

Must have been fun to sound so good!!

I've played a couple open mic's where I didn't forget the words or drop my pick:( :D

Thanks for lettin' me in on your troubadore days.

Have you posted any live stuff of you and your daughters band?

The Homely One.

Theron.

Ya man,I dig that jive!
Great recording, man those guys/chicks were great,(probably still are!)
That bass, wow, sounds like a miced upright.
The ivories were killer!

I really dig this stuff,I saw the Platters twice last year, not quite the same, but man, those guys as old as they are were unbelievable!
In a little club 10 feet away.
They did Unchained Melody better than Iv'e ever heard it anywhere.

Just goes to show you,if you got real talent, dosn't matter how old you are.
(Wish I had some!):D

I really enjoyed this,thanks,
Pete

This is so damn great! What a tight recording all around! You guys probably brought the house down everytime!

Thanks for sharing this! :)

Man, that's lovely. I love Dan Hicks, but what amazes me is that in addition to Dan Hicks there was you guys doing the same kind of stuff. It's a pity you can't remember the drummer's name, that little break is tasty. Damn, I wish I could walk a bass like that.

What amazes me the most is the singing - how do you do that *live*?

'Let's get it right this time, okay?' LOL

Lovely. Good work.

I love your old recordings, and this is no exception. Man, you have been involved in some great musical experiences. Thanks for posting this....it's great! Makes most of us look very amateur as performers! 40's music in the 70's. :)
nice

very good work, LT....

a bit before my time, but still some good vocal work and playing...very tight......

any chance of posting any snippets of more recent live stuff...i saw you with that DAT recorder......;)

MIKE

Wait a second....

There's something fishy about that....
