I just picked up a hohner pianet t for 90 bucks!I nearly killed myself driving to get it in oakland, but it was so worth it. I got a rhodes off ebay, but it hasn't come yet. I have a good idea what they sound like, seing I'm a carpenters fan. The hohner is very nice. They sound a little more jazzy and "electrical" in my opinion. I love the sound though. And it's only like 48 pounds, and is as small as a 50 dollar keyboard you can buy at costco.

But I guess that's kind of my problem. This thing is so simple,it is COMPLETELY passive. No internal power. No transistors, no preamps, you don't even have to plug it into anything besides what you're wiring it to. No ac cord or anything. So obviously, the gain on this thing is WEAK. I've wired it through my mixer, turned the pre's to the max, and still no good result. What does this thing need do you think? A DI box or something? I don't even get what those things do.......

A DI box will help (all a DI does is bring an instruments signal up to Line Level strength). Basically this thing is like a guitar (well it has a pick-up anyways), so you wont get a good sound unless you use a DI or dedicated Preamp. You could also try throwing a mic (or 2) on it, to capture the percussive effect of the hammers striking the tines, and natural resonance from the body, and blend that in with the direct signal. Good Purchase, Good Luck.

You could try a guitar amp.

Scroll down about 3/4 of the way:

On it's own the Pianet-T has a sharp, biting sound not too unlike a Werlitzer electic piano and not the mellow, bell-like sound of the Fender/Rhodes. Like the Werlitzer the Pianets used accordion reeds for thines. The Pianet-T is all passive electronics. It puts out a mic/guitar level signal and is pretty good and hot all things considered. I've sponge painted mine with red paint to liven up it's drab black appearance. I run my Pianet-T through a Digitech RP-100 digital guitar effects processor not only to give it some really funky electric piano sounds but to give it screaming distorted electric guitar-like lead sounds.

hey thanks guys!

One of the keys don't work. The reed and little suction cup is in good condition, it's the pickup I think.....I'm very unexpirienced with this type of thing......how do I repair this key if it's a pickup problem?

There's a downloadable service manual here, but I don't know if it will be much help.
