Who is Harvey Gerst?

I was wondering the same thing several months ago when Harvey popped in on the old voice-chat on this BBS (which no longer works) and I began asking him some questions about microphones.

While talking to Harvey, I gained an amazing amount of knowledge about mics and recording in our two hour conversation. This man was patient and helpful and answered all of my questions... and believe me, I asked ALOT of questions!

I was awestruck at his expertise, and humbled by his generosity in helping a novice like myself.
So now, when Harvey posts, I just read and learn.
I have nothing but respect for the man.

Okay, so that means nothing to those of you who don't know him.
Allright, I typed in Harvey's name on google, and here's the results I got just from his name....

I hope you have a couple of days to kill while reading all of this... (about a dozen or so pages) and it's just a fraction of what he's accomplished in the recording industry for the past 50 years!
Here's a link that sums up Harvey's experience in his own words... (scroll down through the credits)

your post "hits the nail on the head". I didn't know who he was when i started reading the "microphone thread", but realized that he must have a very deep insight in recording tecnology. Then i started searching on other forums for his posts and I just couldn't stop. Then he posted some mp3s here, and i was simply stunned. The encoding was bad, but one could still hear that some real geniuos was behind the desk (and putting the microphones in place). One of my dreams always was to once watch RVG setup his mics. After knowing Mr Gerst here on this forum this wish isn't as strong as is used to be.
BTW Did you know that he used to record Ornette Colman on a regular basis?
I hope he will be with us another 35 years at least!!!
Happy new year

Wanna know who Harvey is?
He's yer Daddy, baby!!!

...sorry, may be celebrating a bit much tonight... :D

hmmmmmph?

The truth, do you seek?

Want to know who Harvey is, do you?

In everything, Harvey is. Yes. Much to learn you have...much to learn indeed, hmmmmph.

Be patient you must and learn you will. For strong is the power of the Gerst in you, young Mictalker.

But beware the darkside....long threads will you read and many things will you learn. Tempted, you will be but give in to the darkside you musn't. Explain, how will you all the cool new purchases to your wife? hmmmmph?

(Harvey Gerst, you are our last hope)

Harvey is the Man who saved me some bucks by reccomending the ECM8000 for overheads(and other uses). Thanks Harvey!!

heylow,

Now THAT'S funny.

Now, how to put on these robes made for a 3 foot muppet - when I'm around 6 foot tall. Yoda is a great image. All I hafta do is figure out how to wear the robes and keep Frank Oz from trying to stick his hand up my butt.

This seems as good a place as any to send a huge

T H A N K Y O U

out to not only Harvey, but also to the entire community here. I've only been around a couple months, but there is a lot to be learned here thanks to folks like Harvey. I try to chip in when I can, without adding too much noise to the signal, but the bottom line is I've learned more here in two months than I learned about audio engineering the last time I was dabbling in it.

Again, not to be be gratuitously sticky, but it does deserve to be said:

T H A N K Y O U

T H A N K Y O U

Well, yes, the sets come from here, but I'm just one of the custodians. You send the money to rec.audio.pro.

About 3 years ago, someone asked on rec.audio.pro how they could hear some stuff we had done, since not all of us there are well known to the general public. We decided to put out a compilation disc of some of the regulars and it grew to be four 74 minute discs for the first set, which we sold for the princely sum of $15 for the whole set, including airmail shipping anywhere in the world. It was called "r.a.p. CD In Blue"/

Two years ago, we did it again but it got out of hand, swelling to seven 74 minute discs called "Bohemian r.a.p. CD", which we sold for the princely sum of $25 for the whole set, again including airmail shipping anywhere in the world.

A year ago, we produced the third set called "r.a.p. 3 times", four 74 minute discs for the set, which we sold for the princely sum of $15, for the whole set, including airmail shipping anywhere in the world.

We've been sold out of the first two sets for years, but we still have about 100 sets of the last compilation left. What makes it interesting is that all the notes about what mics were used, placement and techniques are there on the website.

All the info is at:

Daddy can I borrow the Neumann?......

Sorry, Sonic Misfit... but Harvey is originally a Chicagoan!

Born on the West side of Chicago and lived here 'til he was 10 years old.

We officially claim him as "one of ours". ;)

Buck, I remember that nite on the old-voice-chat (though i was a tad inebriated!!) That's also the same nite Harv mentioned to me
about purchasing a TOPAZ 24/8 board (which I did) and have been very happy with my new board ever since!

God Bless Harvey!
May he rest in peace!!:D

Harvey's the Pope of the Church of the Devine Backbeat.

And I won't even mention that other picture . . .

the love!

all the love on this thread is just making me tear up... but IT"S TRUE! this is one of the HEALTHIEST and best boards around! thank you for i'm sure what will be future years and years of learning.... as one of of the few (what seems few) gals who lurk around on this board.. lemme say.. guys you do me proud.... (cept for the sex thread... someone must have been really bored...) ;)

Well, I gotta say that hanging around this place for the last year or so has been like going back to school in many respects (without the booze and all the girls ... wait, they never hung around me back then either) and Harvey, you've been one of my best teachers - even though you don't know it. I'm soaking up this stuff like a sponge, and can tell that it's making a difference in my amateur doodlings with live sound, small gigs, school concerts (quick - what's the best way to mic 135 elementary age kids at a Christmas concert in the front end of a stone church big enough for each corner to have its own zip code and avoid the Devil's own feedback?) and so forth. Not to get squishy on y'all, but, hey - thanks, Harvey! You've made a difference to people like me.

oh and may i say, i am not Gidge, Gidge rocks though, nice to meet you Gidge!
