Not really wanting to buy a bass (when saving for a Line 6 Flextone), has anyone tried D.I.ing say a Boss Octave pedal to simulate a bass on a guitar? How authentic does it sound?

The best effect for a guitar to sound like a bass that I have heard was an older model of the Digitech Whammy Pedal. It had an octive shifter on it that sounded awesome. The newer models may be just as good, but I have not heard one in a long time. Most pitch shifters for guitars sound too fake for me.
