when i save my audio mixdowns and then play them back in another program such as itunes they seem to have lost quite a bit of their punchiness
why is this so?

It probably has to do with itunes having a different monitor path than Nuendo.
The only other thing I can think of is you are saving it something low-rez like an mp3.
