Unpossible!
I know there is a mic faq, and believe me, I have read it MANY times. I just want some opinions....

NT5 matched pair - $280
603s matched pair - $220
603's unmatched - $165

I want to record acoustic guitar and a string trio (cello, violin, bass). Maybe ocasionally drum overheads. What do you guys think? Are the Rodes worth the extra money? I know they are both fairly highly regarded on this forum. Or, do you have another suggestion in this approx price range?

Thanks,

NL5

Another $30 on top of the price of the NT5s will net you a pair of Studio Projects C4s, which have both cardioid and omni capsules (that's only $15 for each extra capsule).

Actually, it looks like I can get them for the same price as the NT5's - Any other reccomendations for the C4's? Or the others? Or?

Yes- C-4, IMHO, is a better mic than the NT5 for your applications, with or without the extra capsules. In addition, the NT5's don't come with shock mounts, have no pads, and no bass rolloff.-Richie

Another vote for C4's. I love them and I don't think I've once heard anyone who positively dislikes them.

Pair of CAD M179's would smoke either of those options in sound and versatility.

For SDC though, a pair of AT3031's is an option as well.

The NT5's and C4's are decent mics indeed.

I've never used the C4 or M179 before, but back to your orignal question... I perfer the MXL603S over the NT5 on acoustic guitar... and I'd get the the Matched Stereo Pair with shock mounts.

plus you can get the matched 603Ss with chock mounts for $199, as I just did. Will be here tomorrow. Yum.
