I want to get a battery powered condenser microphone to use with my portastudio (no phantom power). I want to stay away from external preamps for phantom supply. So...if you have experience with these two mics, would you mind posting your preference? I have a sm57 and I want one more mic in my low budget home studio setup. Or maybe I should just get an sm58. I use the 57 for micking my guitar amp. The c1000 condenser would be for vox and acoustic guitars. Also, on another topic, do I need a DI box for my bass if I have active pickups? I plug my bass strait into the portastudio and the active pickups drive a strong signal into the board just fine. Thanks all to any comments! By the way, this is by far my favorite home studio type blogging place. :D

I think the Rode NT3 would be a better choice. They give a very good result on acoustic instruments as well, but you would need a pop filter for doing vocals.

If you already have a 57 I don't think a 58 is going to give you much else, and you may find that you get pretty good results with the 57 for vocals anyway.

The 57 and the NT3 is a pretty good line up for what you want to do.

I have no experience with the NT3 - aside from that, IMO you should get a plain phantom power supply (no preamp) for three reasons: You'll get a much better sound with higher constant voltage to the mic, you'll save money over time not having to buy the batteries, and you can be nice to the environment as well...

thanks guys...say, might an md421 be a better choice than these? Or maybe the ev re20. Maybe I should just stick with dynamics. Any more thoughts?

Hey isfahani,
I took your advice and bought a regular external power supply from Rolls. I did not know they had those but it works great. I picked up an Oktava Mk-012 at a local Music Go Round for $100.00. This is one is authentic and this setup sounds great! Thanks for the advice. Also have a ksm27 and an sm57. So, that takes care of my microphone needs.
