Re: C1, C3000B, NT1

My prediction is that the C1 will be judged the best of these three
for vocals, followed by the C3000B, and then the NT1.
I sold the C3000B (nice sound/too sensitive to ambient noise),
and the NT1 (a bit harsh). I'm very happy with the C1 though,
it sounds warm without being muddy.

An interesting "sleeper" microphone is the Audio-Technica at3527 omni. Although it doesn't sound in the same class as the C1,
it sounds better to me than the NT1. It has a low sensitivity so it can be used effectively in home recording when you're not in the
mood to turn off your air conditioning, fridge, etc.! It's pretty
cool for group vocals too. It runs about $150 to $175 street price.
Of course, for just a little more you can step up to the C1.

It seems the rode nt2 is also a behringer b2 re housed dont know if thats true or not but i posted the other day this mic can be had for 199usd and id say if it is an nt2 this seems a pretty fair deal indeed. :)

Harald and RE:

Re Rode mic components.........(I spoke to Rode as they aren't too far away from me and below is a c&p from my earlier post).

"Capsules are Chinese, Rode dont make any here in Aust. at this time. Assembly and some machining and casting is local but again the guy stressed that a lot of their content is sourced overseas. Frankly I felt he was overly defensive about just how much is Aust. and how much is from Asia. But if they wish to keep that end of their business "low-key", so be it. "

And a warning to anyone who attempts to do comparisons on these or any others mics.............BE PREPARED TO BE "FLAMED" ........!!!!!

I will be continuing to compare AKG, Studio Projects, Rode and any other mics that become available, BUT there's no way in hell I will post any results here for the sceptics or fools (who usually haven't bothered to try these mics) to go on a feeding frenzy with.

Peace.............ChrisO

No way in hell, huh? Dont be a selfish ass! If you find things about mics you like and dislike, by all means, post it. Fuck everyone if they try to flame you, it doesn't matter.
I'll be tring out a pair of K-mart headphones through a radio shack preamp, soon, for drum overheads.
I'll post the results.
I MIGHT even get flamed, but I doubt it. Think I'll post the results on the EQ forums too. They won't flame me there ;)

db51,
Check out this review of the Rode nt100 and NTK.

They LOVE both these mics.
I got my C1 based on a review from this site.
It's everything they said it was. And more.
Carmen

Thanks for the link, Carmen. I forgot all about these models. Just curious, though . . . do these guys ever have anything bad to say about anything they've reviewed? That's really the only way I can trust a source, is if I can find both bad and good reviews.

"This is everything that's right with microphone design, and then some. I cannot say enough good things about these mics, and I'm damn hard to please. They are top-notch, they have a voice all their own, and quality far above the asking price."

I believe that they're great mikes, but this still sounds a little fishy. Sounds like it could have been written by Rhodes' marketing deparment. :o)

Oh Yeah...

Hey Chess,
I've found from reading this site that they're credibility is very important to them. Just my opinion, but I trust them. But I know what you mean. Let the buyer beware...

Check out this review at Prorec of the Marshall MXl 2001.

They HATED this mic. I guess they don't like everything they review...........
This is the review of the Studio Projects C1 that convinced me not only to buy the mic, but a Joemeek VC1Q as well.

They were absolutely right.I was NOT disapointed.

Just my .02,
C

thanks

Yea, I get the feeling these guys are pretty legit.

I agree on the Jomeek, too. Great unity. Unfortunately, my basement was recently flooded in a thunderstorm we had last week. All of my equipment survived and is fully intact . . . with the exception of my C1, which I found completely submerged, swimming around about 4 inches off the floor.

I haven't tested it out yet. Too afraid. If it survives the flood test, which I somehow doubt, I will be back to sing it's praises even further.

My only real problem with the C1's : I get a great vocal sound from them, but everything else is just acceptable to pretty good. My NT-2's seem to do the trick for just about everything I throw at it. Still, at $200, I suppose it's one of the better mikes out there (for the price), if purely for vocals.

chessrock,

Sorry to hear about your C1 doing an imitation of the Titanic. :) Tell you what I will do for you. You send in your mic to me, and I will personally rebuild the entire mic, new capsule and all....

Here is the hitch...I will do it all for free! That's right, for free. You see, not only am I a business man, but I am a person that has feelings as well, and right now, I am feeling pretty bad for you with what happened. :(

Going the extra mile for service is part of what I am all about. I am sure if anyone out there on this bbs, or others who have had the occaision to have a Joemeek serviced, can tell you that I send parts for free, and do repairs of products both in and out of warranty. I even fix units for free that were bought used. What other company does this?

My take is my service has to be as good as my product, so I better get out of the business if I am not willing to backup what I preach. So to all of you Joemeek or Studio Projects users, they may bash me on these sites for telling everyone what I think about my products, but I do stand behind them.

Call me to get your ATR# to return your mic. I can have it done for you in 24 to 36 hours as we do with 90% of our repairs.

Alan, you 'da F#$%^ing MAN!!

You send in your mic to me, and I will personally rebuild the entire mic, new capsule and all....free!

Alan,
Like I said in the subject line, YOU 'DA MAN!!!
I'm quite pleased with my C1, and hope I never have to take you up on the excellent service. Knowing you back your products in such a manner makes me even happier with my purchase.

Queue :D :D :D

That's how business is done...

Alan,
Very cool. I recently bought a C1 and a VC1Q.
Love them both.
Knowing that this is how you treat your customers when they're down makes me feel very good about spreading the word about your products.
Very Classy.

Keep up the good work,
Carmen
:D

To paraphrase State Farm Insurance, "Like a good neighbor, PMI
Audio is there". One of the reasons, alan, I didn't bother to A/B
the C1 with (perhaps?) it's closest competitor, the Marshall V67,
was because of your attitude about service and commitment to
your products-good show! (Plus it sounds great)

P.S. chessrock, I hope the remainder of your equipment can be
checked, if necessary, for your safety from any electrical
hazards.

PPS. alan, please include the standard Stephen Paul floatation
modification , complete with pontoon shockmount when I
return my C1 to you (just kidding!).

I think the test suggested earlier in this thread was a really fantastic idea. I already have a C-1 and a C-3, but I would like to see some comparisons to other mics in a similar price range. I recently sent my C-1 to my brother in LA and he preferred it to an NT2 for recording guitar and used it in his project. (It now may be a while before I get it back!) But lets hear more!

Recording Engineer, if you are still willing to run some test comparisons and have the time, email me at john@northwestnet.net and I can send you a SE 3500 mic, (large diameter condenser, low noise- 15db), which I also found to be an amazing mic for around $160, or $120 if you go direct. I can even offer up the C-3 for a week or so. The rest of the mics offered by Harvey would also be awesome. Just say the word and give me an address!

Alan hyatt.

Recently my C1 turned black shrunk and now looks Identical to a Nady scm900. If I send this in will you fix it for me too?:D

Sorry Darrin, it sounds like NADY put the Voodoo curse on your C1. The only solution is to buy another one, and keep it away from the other mic gremlins. :D

Compared my c-1 against my akg c3000b. On an alto voice the c1 wins, mainly cuz of the overall brightness. Next I compared them on a bass voice, I was shocked. The c1 sounded better on this guy.
However today I compared the c1 to a shure 849 on an acoustic guitar. The 849 won this round. The c1 was to big a mic to close mic an acoustic guitar and the 849 sounded a little tighter to me. What I mean by tighter is the transient response is faster cuz it's a small diaphram condenser mic. The shure mic was a little bit quieter, I had to turn my pre amp up more than on the c1. I didn't use same preamp level I used same record level, same distance, same guitar, same mic cord, same pre amp, same guitar chord ( E maj).
For recording the guitar from 2 feet away the c1 beat the 849. The sound wasn't to different but the 849 brought out a lot of overtones that started mudding up the sound. The c1 brought out the same overtones but they were'n't as loud.

Alan Is there any small condensers availible from PMI? I am in the market for overheads and am spying a pair of superlux's for 100.00.

Darrin,

They are in the works, but we have so much on our plate right now, that our time is being spent on finishing the VT-1, and getting the new "B" Series finished up.

Small diaphragms as well as handhelds are in the near future.

Allright Alan, that was downright decent...

Not that it matters, and who am I to say but....

As hard as it is for a jerk like me to say, I guess.... I guess.....

I guess I can give you the benefit of the doubt too.

-Jett Rocker.
