I am recording live to 2 track and the board I am using (12 into 2) only has one FX send and return that I will be using for compression. (see post from Monday "Compression Recording live"

How can I add reverb to the vocals using a multi-effect Yamaha Rev-100 then? This is an old board that only has XLR ins no Direct Inputs or anything.

Thanks for the feedback

BlueLou,

Do you have "insert" jacks on the mic channels of your mixer (or on the main outputs)? Because if you do, you should do compression through "inserts" and not the Effects bus. Insert jacks change the entire signal, which is best for compression. Unless you crank effects sends to their maximum, you're only compressing the signal partially.

So if you've got "insert" jacks, use a "Y" cable from your insert jack to your compressor. Then use the effects send/return for reverb (which it was really made for).

Thanks Rev E. I did not realise that about effects send and return. Unfortunately, the board only does not have inserts. I will figure out a way. What if I run the mic 1/4 inc in the muti-effects and then 1/4 inc out, do I need a DI (like you would use for bass) to go back in XLR in the console?

BlueLou,

You said your mixer has two auxillary sends, right? Well many mixers have mono effects sends (and stereo returns). I'm assuming that's the case with yours. This is what you do: Patch the compressor into the first effects send and turn the EFX send knobs on the channel and the master send all the way up. This way you're getting all of the signal to the compressor/limiter.

Then patch the effects processor into the second effects send/return. Generally, compression is done before effects processing , so I wouldn't suggest the workaround that you described above.

Rev E Thank you. I am starting to understand the possibilities. Unfortunately theres only on EFX send/return. The other is a "foldback?" which is a return only I guess. I will use the efx send/return for the compressor, and because I am only using the EFX processor on the voice, I will use the foldback, sent the vocal track out thruogh the processor, then I will go back in trough another track. This way I can compress more then on track and both compress and use reverb on the voice. This should work?

Thanks again Rev E.
