Tiny Stonehenge Moment
Hi, NTB asked me to remix one of his covers to see If I could make much difference, as he doesn't use a fully-functioning DAW.

I'd love your opinions on these mixes - did I make an improvement in your opinion? Of my two remixes is there one you prefer?

What changes would you make?

EDIT: CLICK THE LINKS, NOT THE WIDGET - they seem to be playing up. :)

1st mix is NotThatBright's version, done on his stand-alone Tascam machine:

2nd mix is my first attempt. I tried to mix it as I thought NTB would like it based on his own mix preferences, but cleaned up a bit.

3rd mix is how I would mix it if it was my own cover.

Thanks for your time. :)

Mix 1:
His voice is rather quiet.

Mix 2:
Snare sounds more prominent
Voice is at the right level
All the instruments sound a bit muffled, like every above 4-5kHz got taken down a notch or so but that's really on all three of the mixes.

Mix 3:
The snare is HOT in this one. It sounded like it might even have been clipping. It was definitely a bit too loud anyhow. Very boxy and boomy.

I liked 2 the best.

They weren't all working for me, but I managed to listen to the 3rd one and the snare is way too loud man. These crappy computer speakers I listen on will instantly over enhance anything extremely out of place. But over all cool tune. :thumbs up:

Hi, Phil. Firstly, thanks for listening. :thumbs up: Secondly the widget seems to be a bit glitchy. If you click the direct links it's better. Thirdly, overall I think the second mix is better, but I have an affection for the reverby snare. Perhaps I just need to pull it down

Schwarzenyaeger, I'm not hearing dullness on the guitars, but my speakers aren't reference quality. I'll accept that that is what you're hearing, though. The drum tracks were all hot, the recording was done before NTB started recording at lower levels. I think my treatment of the snare accentuated that. :)

Thanks again. :)

It should be said that my timing with the drums was sloppy as hell even for me and Bubba did a great job fixing it, however it was done. Unfortunately there was wasn't much he could really do with the loose rolls and fills at the end of the verses. I really like the song and was going to do it over at some point when I wasn't falling off the drum throne, but I lost interest. I appreciate that you made it as listenable as it can be, given all the flaws.

You do yourself a disservice. I did hardly any timing fixes at all and I thought your first mix was pretty decent. I still really like my last mix but I seem to be in a minority! I'm an 80s kid, I suppose. :D

That was interesting getting to compare all 3. I liked some things about each mix.
Mix 1 was a little indistinct with less bass and less clarity. Still had a good overall energy though.
Mix 2 the bass guitar really stepped forward and the guitars and vocals were cleaned up, but somehow it seemed a bit dull overall.
I think I liked mix 3 the best. Did you change things there besides the drums? Somehow I thought the panning was different on the guitars and/or vocals? I liked it, but the snare and kick were both much too loud for me. If you brought those down some but left everything else on that mix the same, I think that would be it for me.

Def too much snare in 2 & 3.
The snare in comparison to the toms in one of the 1st fills seems way too loud, (it's also a bit of a flub fill on the last bit of snaretoo)..
That's my only nit with #3.
Snare aside I like 3 the best.

Thanks for the listen, heatmiser, I listened last night and dropped the kick and snare 2dB each. It definitely does sound better that way- I'll post it tonight.

As above, ray. Thanks for the listen and comment, dude. :D
