This is a band I am producing, all of the kids are under 15. They signed to do four songs with me, and we have finished tracking. I do believe this is a final mix, or as close as can be without further opinion. Please critique the mix as much as you need be. Thank you

Thanks to the comments so far, the second mix is updated.

IMO it all needs to be compressed so more, mainly the vox. The snare to me isn't sitting as well in the mix as it could, not sure how to fix it though sorry.

Wow.. More compression? I had thought it may have been squashed too much.. heh.. So no thoughts on how to get the snare sitting better?

Man. sorry to say but it could do with alot more work. The vocals sound nice, but need a bit more compression. Double up that guitar. If you are finished tracking and cant get the guys back in to record more then just clone the original track and nudge it about 5-10ms and pan. In this one the guitar is to one side which is weird.

If you want the solo as a focal point as im sure you do as the vocals stop for the solo, then boost that solo right up.

Bass need brought up in the mix.

If the bass player is 15 he is awesome. It's not going to win any grammys, but when I was fifteen I wasn't anywhere close. They're off to a good start, imho.

The drums sound very small

Man, the bass has to come up. A lot. Kick is anemic. No ass. I'm not busting your chops, honest. It sounds like it's tracked well enough, just mix proportion is wrong. More than likely your monitoring setup or room or both. I'd bet a remix on this could take what you have here to another level.

Hey Track Rat, can you offer any more advice? Bust my ass hard because I would like to use this band's material in my "portfolio"

The best advice I can give you is to find some commercially released music of bands that are in the same type of music and listen to it CRITICLY thru your monitors. Concentrate on where everything is proportion wise, how does the bass sound in relation to the guitars, etc, and really learn your playback system. This will give you a frame of reference of what the big boys mixes sound like through your system, then you can get in the ball park. Also, get an SPL meter from Rat Shack (under $50) and mix around 80 to 85 dB measured from your mixing position. That'll help with Fletcher-Munson curve issues a bit. Like playing an instrument, this is a learned skill and it takes a little time. ;)

.....listen to the rat..........

:)

What are you monitoring on burn? Ive never asked you that I dont think.

I have a feeling either your bass is overhyped on your system (like a huge sub turned way up) or you are listening on tiny monitors with zero bass. ....I may be wrong. Compare this to the last song I gave you and tell me how they sound different on your speakers. Good or bad, no matter. Cause my low end is spot on, something you may be able to use to help you out.
