Note To The Stupid Rappers

there is no real mic that I idolize... nor should anyone else. However, I do respect the mic.

that said, the reason that the U87 has the reputation that it does was because for it's time (mid-70s and a bit earlier), it was a mic that was good in multiple applications, fairly priced, and most importantly... there weren't a lot of alternatives.

Home recording was something for the rich during that time frame. With advances in techniques and technology, costs have gone down and quality (for the most part) has come up from several manufacturers. Some people scoff at the R0de series, but 5-10 years ago, we would have coveted them.

Things change... some mics have changed with the times, and some haven't. In the case of the U87, Sennheiser noticed that a lot of people were using them for certain applications, and not for others... therefore they tailored the mic to suit it's strong suites and develop other mics to offset it's weaknesses. Due to it's hyped presence in many applications, I use it for certain VO (especially those requiring a younger voice).

One thing I keep telling people is that anytime you notice people blasting or touting something, find out why... experiment with it and find out for yourself. Despite the hate, I've found the R0de series to be rather good, because I didn't find them to be as brittle as everyone said (the Chinese-made ones were... and deserved the rep, the AU made ones are much better IMHO). I didn't have a lot of love for the Chandler Germanium Pre despite the hype, but after playing with one for a few days, I found it's charm and bought one for my rack. The same can't be said for a lot of RNC stuff, which some people drool over.

All that said, let's put this back on-topic. If you want the "bling" factor, that's great... it tells me that you don't know what you're talking about and your music will probably suck. I'll have more respect and be more attentive to the person who takes the time to find out what works best with their own voice and use that instead of trying to impress me with a pic of their mic.

If you need a pretty mic to impress me, then you obviously are lacking in talent. Talent trumps equipment every day of the week, and twice on Sundays.

i dont understand the big deal with the U87.. its just a condesor right? no tube, no variable pattern, right? i would hope there's better things out there for what, $2800??

also, i see vintage MD421 "telefunken" mics on ebay.. are they made by Senn, or tele? or were they a joint company or something??

The U87 has always been a LDC with three patterns.

When used on the right source and a good chain, you will understand why it is such a respected mic. However, it is not the be-all, end-all that some make it out to be. I own it, I respect it, but I do not worship it.

The "telefunken" reference can mean many things, but mostly that the mic is using a telefunken tube. My Peluso has a Telefunken, as does my U47 and 67. My Chandler pre has one, but my M-610 does not. The element within the tube give a type of distortion that is rather pleasing to most people, hence it's popularity in recording equipment.

because it has been on more award winning albums and lauded by more upper tier engineers than any other microphone in existance.

I own 2 Stephen Paul Audio u87s...yeah..they are smokin'

Built in spring reverb, you should hear this thing, would give lexicon a run for its money....just need another mic to record it though as this is just a plate attached to a spring...so its not the best rap mic you need its the best mic that picks up this device, no its not a childs toy this is a real pros workhorse of real hardware spring reverb.

stewpidd raypers

so yu thinkk the ekoe mikerafone wud be gud for rekording rap?

---No seriously, there should be a new forum category dedicated to at least vocal mics if not rappers.

I would figure that using the microphone forum would be good enough...

sadly, we don't differentiate into forums based on music, which would probably be the appropriate answer.

Though I must say, even in IRL, it does become tiring when you keep getting asked what the "best mic" is. The answer should be obvious to people as soon as they start researching... whatever works with your voice, the application you are using it for, and fits in your budget at the time is the "best mic" for you ;)

I WANT ONE.

Somebody just sent me neg. rep for posting this due to me being "hateful" towards rappers. While I respect that sentiment, I would like to point out that I, myself an MC and I love hip hop so it's not like that. I'm posting this so that they understand that the annoyance they give on the board and then never post again later affects the hip hop community on the BBS.
