not satisfied with the rode nt-1a

Make a seperate recording of just the Rode and maybe a Kick.
If you can get your overhead(s) sounding good on its own you can mix the other mics in with a lot better success.

Along with that terrible sounding kit it is tough to tell what the NT-1A sounds like, and therefore you are going to have a hard time deciding if you like it and want to keep it.
 
Studio Projects or sE Electronics mics

The Studio Projects C1 cardioid for $199 or the C3 cardioid/omni and figure 8 for $269 will definitely give you a better room sound.
Your vocals will be a bit brighter too.

If you can move up to $299 you should try out the Se Electronics SE2200-A.

as a follow up to this thread i started i just want to post a recording i did (rough mix)today using all the same mics and using all your advice to show the difference. this kids drums were alot better sounding, although the toms were still not tuned i dont think. and the recording came out a hell of alot better. thanks alot for all your advice guys!

Even on my lousy PC speakers, this is a BIG improvement over the first recording. Well done! So, how do you like the Rode now, eh?!
