i've got both cooledit 2k and n-track...well, firstly i admit that i just ordered a mic pre amp to do this right but i've got tracks that are ok without it (from varying mic distance from guitar amp). but what i just found out is that if i crank up the volume on the stereo to playback these tracks they sound horrible! i've got the plug-ins to clean up the hiss&cracks but this is just poor quality recording i think.....so can someone tell me what steps to take here?? thanxx

What kind of sound card are you using? Have you gone into your windows level controls and tweaked them? Also, make sure that if you are recording digitally that your clock speed is set correctly. Your preamp is an important link in the chain as is your mike? What are you using? Need more Info!

have SB live. in the windows volume box i've got the settings at 3/4 (record properties). not sure about the clock speed...do you mean motherboard speed? i find it's crucial as to the ratios between mic distance and guitar amp volume.

If you move your mikes away from the speakers you are getting more of the room sound meaning that your source signal from the microphone is weaker than it may need to be. If you want more room sound in the mike, then you will have to compensate for the level loss by turning up your amp or using a "good" preamp. If you use a cheap preamp, the amount of noise introduced into the signal goes up exponentially. When recording into your computer, you need to make sure that the windows volume controls for the line in are as high as you can make them without distorting the signal. Also, make sure that the other recording controls(Cd in, Mixer, Microphone) are set to zero since you are only using the line-in signal. I tried using my compaq's built in sound card, and had a similar problem. I have been told that a better sound card makes a huge difference. I don't think that the SB live is the ideal card for recording from what I've been told. Lastly, make sure you are recording at 16 bit / 44.1 khz as this can make a hug difference. The clock speed I was referring to is only if you are using a digital in so don't worry about it. Good luck!

I think your havin clippin probs...... go read the other post U have that I'm also posting on.... it tell U what clipping is, and how/why to prevent it.
