Been lurkin' here ( as well as SAE and John Sayers' site ) for quite some time and getting as much info as I can.

Will be building a house in the new year and have come up with a few different layouts for my home studio.I'll be starting out as PC based but don't want to limit myself as analogue could come in later on.

To start off with I'll post the pic for "layout 3" which is basically a control room and a vocal/acoustic/iso booth.
Dimensions are as follows:

CR L 16.4'
W 13.1'

ISO L 8.2'
W 7.8'

These could change slightly when we receive our final house plans next week (although, if anything the rooms should be a little bigger).....hope this all makes sense. If I've not included enough info let me know and I'll expand where I can.

Thanks all

ps...dont be afraid to use metric measurements (they're actually prefered)

Hey Qikie...Just a thought....If you're doin' any amped shit in the iso you may want to double door that one too....Also, do you have an obsercation window between the two?....Dig the layout....What's that thing to the right in the C/R?

What the fudge???....My posts are all being put before the last one tonight?....

that looks like a cool studio. you're not going to record any drums?

Your layout looks very good. I would echo what Memriloc said, though, about possibly adding a bit more isolation between the control room and the booth. I don't know what you had planned for your wall construction (ie. staggered studs, dual walls, whatever), but be careful to do one of the recommended methods for as much isolation as possible. You'll be glad you did in the long run, and will soon realize your folly if you don't.

Otherwise, looks like a good plan. The control room is dimensionally a good size, and there is plenty of room in the vocal booth to keep someone from feeling trapped in a cage. You might even be able to squeeze a drum kit in there, but it would be tight.

Cheers,
Darryl.....

Thanks for the replies guys.

memriloc: good point....lmao, I knew I'd left a door out somewhere...not! Glad you're comfortable with the layout....I'm figuring you might spend some time in there.

Rocketboy: I want to be able to record "live" drums but I dont want to sacrifice space in the CR. I'm at the moment trying to figure out how to utilize the ISO for both.

DDev: if it were a tight squeeze in the ISO for a "full sized kit" what problems may I run into "reflection wise"......(is this where I turn over shitloads of cash to auralex)?

I'll post a pic of an earlier layout I had in mind, perhaps someone here can mess around with it a bit.

Again, things will be more concrete once the final plans are drawn up (which was supposed to be last week but the dick's had a couple walls in the wrong place...hmmmmmm

The flooring decision has been made tho'. I'll be laying a laminated timber floating floor to both area's so isolation should be cool if I can just remember that extra door (and the space between the walls.

Thanks guys

...heres that other layout.

...isnt this where John usually chimes in with "I can see a corner control room comin on"?

mem...that thing on the right was a piece of furniture in the "smart draw" picture library......Shelby decided it should go there. ;-)

I'll have to let someone with more experience answer your question about the acoustical issues with a small space for drums. I was thinking more in terms of physically trying to move around in the room with a full kit in place. Seems like when I was doing a lot more live playing than I do now that my drummer needed about 8x8 ft to sit in (I could be wrong, I'm getting old...).

As far as layout goes, though, I think you would be happier with the first control room layout. It provides a bit more space which allows the overall sound to develop better than a smaller space (my opinion).

Darryl.....

***memriloc: good point....lmao, I knew I'd left a door out somewhere...not!***

Um....Didn't quite get what you meant here, you didn't forget it?, you're not puttin' one on?.....Sorry, just don't know what you meant....

Does anybody really study anymore? I just keep seeing wasted space :D

Ummm....Yeah....Outlawas?....What's your point? Don't just leace some riddle man.....

:o Look at the pictures posted. Its no crypic message.

I don't really see where I was on a "high horse" or where I was "arrogant".

Why you flipping out. Did I insult you in some other post? That would suck wouldn't it? Not really. I am too good for that huh.

NOTE: THIS NOT SARCASTIC. seriously okay.

There is post by qiktune on 11/05/03. Scroll up a few post to find it. There is an image attached to it. Do you see a room there called "Study"

Good.

Now to quote my self.......

"Does anybody really study anymore? I just keep seeing wasted space :D"

Jokes just are not funny after you have to explain them......in GREAT detail.

I thought it was funny.
I did have to open the picture to get the joke though.. at first I thought you meant he needed to "study" or learn how to design... UNTIL I saw the pic. Then it was funny :)

Space
