Cosmic Cowboy
So a few days ago I scored these 4 reels of NOS BASF 911 2" tape.
I got them today, and I opened one just to spin up a couple of minutes worth to see the condition of the tape, and it's smooth as silk....like it just came from the factory.
All 4 reels are the same batch, same source (a studio that stopped using tape)...so I don't need to check the other three reels. They even came with the original cardboard shipping boxes that hold 2 reels each...so I know they were well taken care of.

I've always loved BASF/EMTEC 911 tape. I've got a bunch of reels in 1/4" and 1/2" format, going back to the pure "BASF" years to the in-between transition spiral logo, and to the final all-EMTEC years, and no matter what vintage, they all play like brand new...smooth as silk.

I've been on the lookout for BASF or EMTEC 2"...and I only had two reels of EMTEC 911 in 2" format...and over the last three years, I've never come across any more, until now, and these are some of the last BASF branded reels, vintage probably around '95-'96 which is when BASF broke off as an independent tape company...then changed to EMTEC going into '97.
For some reason, I see Ampex/Quantegy 499 and GP9 all the time...and even EMTEC 900, which is like the GP9....but the 911 just never shows up in 2" format.
So...these are prized reels for me, with the BASF logo printed directly onto the reels, rather than the later EMTEC years when the logo was applied as a label. These will be saved for special project work, otherwise, I have a bunch of NOS Ampex & Quantegy 499 that I use currently on my 2".
The BASF/EMTEC 911 is more like 456, of which I only have one NOS reel.

The cool thing about my Otari MX-80 is I can have it set up for both 456/911 and 499, and with just a flip of a switch I can go from one to the other without doing a full re-calibration. :)

Oh...the best part...I got all 4 reels, with shipping for only...........$193.10 !!!
One of the best tape deals I've done.

And I can certainly develop a soft spot for that API console you're showing.
If I can just hit the lottery.

You got balls showing up on a *home recording* site with that studio setup!!! :D ;)

No doubt!

I used to have one of those Gibson Skylark amps. I loved that thing and miss it so!

That was a good score, Miro!

I think my best tape score remains the two cases of NOS sealed 1/4" x 2500' GP9 pancakes for $30 shipped. And there was even an OEM black anodized 10.5" Technics reel in the box...which I sold for $30. So essentially 20 new GP9 pancakes for $0.

Hey...nice to see you posting. :)
Hope things are going better for you!
