I found the Noobs and equipment thread interesting, especially since I am a noob.

Phase 1: I play a nylon string guitar. Here is my first piece of recording equipment.

sony hand recorder.webp

This is a digital hand recorder. I would simply lay it on my music stand and record what I was playing. Then I would play it back to see how things sounded. I could also upload to my PC, so I could store my songs. It records in MP3 format. It came with some software that would allow you to 'divide' the recording. So with some effort you could edit the recording, however, my only motivation was to just record my play so that I could quality control my timing on the songs I play, especially the rasgueos. I play an old Yamaha GC-231-ii from the 80's. Great guitar but it's a piece of shit if you know what I mean. I still use this recording device because it is easy to use and serves its purpose very well.

Phase 2. A few years later I bought this: ZoomH1.webp

Along with this Zoom recorder, their most basic model, I downloaded Audacity, free software. Pretty easy stuff to use. I spent a weekend playing around with the recorder, the software, and playing some songs. Did some research on the web and determined that recording is bullshit, and that there is definitely a difference between a musician and a "recording artist." I looked closely at some of these YouTube videos and determined that there is a lot of fake stuff going on out there. I finished that weekend with a bad attitude towards recording.

Phase 3. Some of my childhood friends got a hold of me and dragged me into facebook. What a mistake, that I don't regret. I keep in contact with my childhood friends and Army buddies via facebook. Lots of fun. No strangers allowed and nobody from work allowed. "Hey! Why don't you put up a YouTube video of yourself?" "Um..no!"

This of course got me curious about recording on camera. So I used the camera in my PC and the mic in the PC to make a few films of me playing. Easy to do, but the quality sucks. I also dubbed with the H1 recorder, pretty easy, but quality of recording and video is low.

Phase 4. So here I am today. I have done research for my needs over the last several months and now have an interface and a condenser mic on the way. My setup will be in my living room where I usually practice/play. I have vaulted ceilings and the sound is great even though I have a carpeted floor on a slab (am considering wood replacement). The week of Thanksgiving I will practice using the new audio equipment. As for video, I will be researching further, which is one of the reasons I came here, and may start my video experiments over Christmas.

Gee, what do I win? Please share whatever you're on so we can try to make sense of this.

What items did you buy?
Did you get a microphone stand? Microphone Cable? Headphones?
What Recording Software will you be using?

I was quite relieved to see a picture of a hand recorder when I opened this thread.

Mic and interface just came in the mail today. I haven't gotten the mic stand yet. Needs to be a boom stand since I sit when I play, like in my photo. Searched here and found some good recommendations on stands. Will check them out at a brick & mortar. Same with the headphones and the mic cable. I'll work on a recording as soon as I get setup and post it on something like soundcloud. I'd like to get a good recording in time for my wedding anniversary in January, so I am hoping to come down the learning curve over Thanksgiving weekend. Just a recording of the music, perhaps later add a video as I am still learning about that and don't want to make a hasty purchase on camera/video equipment.

One (or two!) of these ..
MMB63 - GYC - MMB63 MINI MICROPHONE BOOM STAND | CPC

are very handy for the home bod because they have a small footprint and are ideal for the seated gitist.

Dave.

Thanks. This appears to be an excellent suggestion. I am indeed concerned about the height. I need something low about in the 24-inch height range as you can see from my profile photo. Also needs to be weighty to counter the condenser mic weight. Small footprint and easily stowed away is also a requirement since I can't leave my studio up 24/7 in the living room. I will be visiting a store this evening to see if I can find the same brand in the link or similar. Taking my shock mount with me to ensure it fits.
