I found the Noobs and equipment thread interesting, especially since I am a noob.
Phase 1: I play a nylon string guitar. Here is my first piece of recording equipment.

This is a digital hand recorder. I would simply lay it on my music stand and record what I was playing. Then I would play it back to see how things sounded. I could also upload to my PC, so I could store my songs. It records in MP3 format. It came with some software that would allow you to 'divide' the recording. So with some effort you could edit the recording, however, my only motivation was to just record my play so that I could quality control my timing on the songs I play, especially the rasgueos. I play an old Yamaha GC-231-ii from the 80's. Great guitar but it's a piece of shit if you know what I mean. I still use this recording device because it is easy to use and serves its purpose very well.
