hi i'm a noob to computer recording..i've got a Yamaha MG12/4FX and i plan to hook it up to my desktop's soundcard, which has one mic input and 4 other inputs. This sounds silly, but how do i hook it up? Eg., what jack go from what to where? i'm using cakewalk..there are group bus outs and stereo outs, how do i connect the mixer to the pc so i can do recording? Also must i have a sort of y-cable to connect L and R outputs to my soundcard input? thanks a lot!!!

You need to connect to a LINE in on your soundcard. But in honesty I would suggest you look at getting an aftermarket card - look at an Maudio Audiophile...

The stock soundcard you have is not likely going to cut it - if you want to use it though, you'll likely have to go mono and just use a 1/4" out to 1/8" line in on your soundcard.

hi thanks...what are the options if i wanna use on say a laptop? mobilepre? another thing..how do i use the pan controls? when i pan hard left theres the signal but nothing on hard right..is it cos i don't have stereo outputs on my soundcard hence i only get L signal?

about the audiophile 2496, i'm planning to buy it..so once i get it installed, i run two rca cables from my two group bus outs to the two rca ins on the card and i can get a stereo sound?

You can use a 1/4" out of your main outs into the RCA ins on the Audiophile. Laptop options are either a laptop card version like the Audiophile, or the more common (and arguably better) option is firewire. Look at the presonus or m audio websites for more info.

i can use the rca outs on mixer to rca ins on 2496 too right? once i do that will i be in stereo output? also, currently i plug the L of my mixer to the sole mic input on my soundcard. Is it possible to use the line ins instead cos i tried and couldn't get it to work. Does that mean i need a soundcard with two mic ins to connect stereo L and R? sorry for all these noobish questions :p
