Cables transfer audio from one place to the other. There are digital cables (such as USB or FireWire) and analog cables (such as 1/4 inch cables and XLR cables).

A common simple cable setup might be an XLR cable with one end plugged into a microphone and the other end plugged into an audio interface. In this example, the audio interface is then connected to the computer with a USB cable. What is happening in this setup is this: The XLR cable takes analog audio from the microphone and inputs it into the audio interface. The audio interface then boosts the volume level of this audio and converts the analog audio into digital audio. The digital audio is then sent down the USB cable into the computer, where it can be altered and mixed.

Good quality cables don't always make a big difference. You can read up on that by Googleing a few things.

It is a very good idea to get studio monitors. Your Apple headphones have very little bass responce and probably an exagerated high end. This will make your mixes lack high frequencies and have too much bass.

It won't affect your quality too much, or at least not in any way you'd notice. Rather than trying to build a closet vocal booth, you'd be better off recording in the nicest sounding room in your house. You could also make some bass traps for very little money and they would improve your sound a lot.

Is he really serious???

Your mic should have come with a mic-to-USB cable. You can read elsewhere hear about the 'quality' of sound from USB mics.
On the mic stand - get a boom stand - with an adjustable arm to put the height wherever you need it.
FOR EXAMPLE

Yeah the only cable you'll need for your AT2020 is the supplied USB cable. And a boom stand is a good choice if you're tall. I'm six feet as well and a boom stand works great for me.

I suggest you buy some moderately good cables. I plug them in wherever they will fit myself.

Yes.
No.
I have a lot of closets but it doesn't seem to affect my sound. Sound proof rooms only protect other people from your racket, they do nothing to improve it.
