I talked to a studio guy who swears that the ultimate entry level recording system is a fostex D160, but its not a stand alone system.

what else would you say you need and what in particular would you recomend (adat? Digital mixers?)
I want to use all 16 tracks and record at least 8 of them simultaneously, for a 5 peice punk band.

I'm sorry if this isn't enough info to base a recomendation off.

The D-160 is indeed a kick ass recorder and is as good if not better than any adat tape based machines, but like an adat you'll need a mixer i would recommend a 16 channel mono analog mixer or if you can afford it a digital mixer (not behringer though).

With a sixteen channel digital you could record sixteen simultaneous, but with analog only 8 unless you add a 8 channel mixer/converter with lighpipe. (the D-160 has only 8 A/D converters)

Also you need to think about routing for recording/playback, for example i have a 16 channel desk which i use the first 8 for recording and the 9-16 for playback BUT this means i have to repatch if i want to playback tracks 9-16 which is a bit of a pain but i plan on getting a patchbay to solve this (ahh more weight!)
(24 Channel mixer would be ideal but i need to keep it practically mobile)

And i would highly recommend the D-1624 which is a 24 bit version of the D-160.

Hope this helps
