Hello all,
1st let me explain who I am and what I am looking for. I am a father of a wonderful son who I feel has tremendous talent in music he plays- saxophone, guitar, bass, drums, keyboard/piano, basically you name it and he will eventually play it..currently he has borrowed a trumpet and is badly wanting a violin. He is also in choir and marching band. He also reads music and is currently trying to put a band together. As a father Id love to see him pursue his music talents weather it be a touring/studio musician or behind the scenes mixing, recording, producing.
As far as his love of music he is into all genres of music but his first love is heavy metal and the likes of that genre.

My questions to you all is :

What basic cheap tools do I need to purchase to help him record and hopefully create a demo.

I'm on a budget and have no qualms buying used or new as long as I can afford it.

current weapons are:
Peavey Vypyr 75 watt amp with Sanpera II foot controller
Peavey Triple XXX 2x12 120 watt combo (Tube)
Jackson DKMG (EMG 81/85) Floyd Rose Trem.
ESP EC-1000 Deluxe (EMG81/60) hard tail (tone pros)
Yamaha 6 string acoustic
Boss Micro BR 4 track recorder
various pedals- MXR chorus ZW38,phase 100, Dunlop crybaby etc..

I also have a Peavey TubeFex rack mount with the foot controller that is in need of repair. And a Rocktron Velocity rack mount amp that is also in need.

Thanks,

Savage

I would do some research @ tweekheadz.com first so that you understand the basics of what it is you are getting into. Then form a realistic plan as to what you can accomplish dependent upon your budget.

Here's the link to what Jimmy was talking about! Tweak's Guide to the Home and Project Studio

I see you have a 4-track, but are you thinking he'd want to record digitally? In my opinion, it would help make his future demo a lot more marketable, with online stuff and whatnot.

I think you should turn him out of home and adopt me instead.... :laughings:

Best thing at this point (you didn't mention his age) is getting him playing with others. The experience of of making music with others will spur him on to more practicing and improving his techniques, and developing his personal style.
Demo recordings are used to get gigs at venues. Unless you plan on him getting solo gigs, skip that route for now.

Blue Microphones Snowball/TW USB
Mixcraft 5 (My favourite anyway, others will surely disagree)
MIDI Keyboard and MIDI lead
and maybe a USB guitar link. Behringer do a cheap one (Ooops dont say the B word ;)
Half Decent Computer......

This will give him the basics to record the instruments you mentioned and a low cost.

Then I'll go with what Mike B said :)

Behringer's UCA202 have had good reviews, he could always connect the four track to that and plug straight into his DAW of choice. They are very cheap.
