Noise?

I have just started experimenting with n-track studio and some drum synth/software. I notice that the recording vu-meters in n-track indicate that there is something occuring even when I am not recording anything. I am assuming that it is internal noise from my pc - fan, power supply? Is this normal and will it affect my recordings? Is there a way to diminish or remove this ambient noise?

I noticed the same thing in Sonic Foundry's Vegas Pro with my set-up. I wouldn't worry about it. On my system this was probably coming from the guitar pickup that was plugged in with the mic/line switch set to leave that channel "live"; it still only came up to -65 dB once in a while.
Just crank the volume on your monitor circuit to where you would if you were blasting a cut on your system; Is the silence (or lack of
it) acceptable?

I also had a guitar connected to the line-in of my sound card. But, as you indicated, it turned out to not be that bad - I couldn't even notice that noise during playback.
