Which one has more controls ? (For a noise gate, a simple threshold may not cut-it, attack? release? )
Why are you limited to these two units?
Which one has the better specifications?
Rack based noise gates uses line-level inputs. (Some may support instrument level, but most don't)
Pedals are typically high-impedance inputs.
Do you want your noise gate, before the preamp, or in the effects loop?
(Best place for it is actually between your preamp and power amp.)
Let's get a dialog started, and you'll certainly find the best option for your setup.

1) NS50 - has Threshold and Decay knobs, as well as a meter for assessing the decay of guitar before distortion/effects. It also has a reduction switch. This is apparently how you hook it up: "You plug the guitar directly in the input, then feed the parallel out to the amp....then your main output (before power stage) back to the stereo line ins of the gate section, then the outputs of that to the power stage."
NS2 - has Threshold and Decay knobs, and a knob that switches between mute and reduction modes, with an LED for reduction (to indicate that it is on, I would assume). Has jacks for input, output, send and return.
2) I am not limited to these two units, but I do not have much money to spend on a noise gate, and after looking around a bit these had the most consistent reviews that I found for being generally inexpensive and reliable
3) I could not find the specs on
the NS50 as it is no longer manufactured, and couldn't find any old pages either. All I know about the specs on it is it's stereo (and is labeled "Pro"). The specs for
the NS2 can be found here:

4) It does not make much of a difference to me where I put it. For convenience sake, I would prefer the effects loop. I am not sure how to put it between my preamp and power amp, but if it's better I would probably do that. I just dont want to have to put it on my pedal board (which, at this time, I have between my guitar and amp) where it will just be taking up space, as it wont be switched on/off very much anyway.
