Noise reduction

Another newbie here...
Had a friend a long time ago who used a dbx noise reduction unit with his audio equipment and it was great! Now that I would like to do some recording with open reel (reel to reel) equipment, I am thinking that I would enjoy the playback more if I had some kind of noise reduction unit. Like a dbx or DOLBY or something. Mostly to reduce tape hiss during quiet passages. Who knows anything about this?
What type or model should I be looking for? (My main source for now will be the satellite dish converter box.) Also, sadly, my reel to reels (I have a Sony and 2 Akai) are not DOLBY equipped.
Where to look? How much do I have to spend? etc, etc.

these noise reduction units can be found in the used areas of your highend stereo stores and your pawn shops out there. I have 3 such dbx units and two of them costed me only 20.00 and the other was 35.00
 
I have an old DBX Type II unit with a dead channel. When it came time to archive all my old encoded tapes I had to do it one channel at a time and re-sync them.

Stupid me never thought to look in a used Hi Fi shop. I figured the units were just too old.

I even sent DBX an email asking if they had ever created a DirectX plugin. By the answer I got, you would think that they had never even considered such thing.

BTW I have an old Advent Dolby unit I could be persuaded to part with.

Dolby Unit

It is an old Advent Dolby B unit made in the '70s. It came with my Revox A77 tape deck. It was working when I got it in 1985, but I can't tell you if it is still working now.

I have no idea what it is worth.
 
I assume your Dolby B unit is a "stand alone" component?

Is this something you patch in between your tape recorder and your amplifier?

You have any way to test it? Might be worth something to me if it works.
