I have just begun recording classical guitar on my computer and am using the soundcard that came with my PC and a little clip-on Creative Labs mic. I am having a lot of problems getting good quality sound; problems with noise, hissing, and the basses are overbearing. Would there be a large difference in quality if I were to upgrade and buy a good audio card and a better mic?

over a soundblaster and a creative labs microphone....most definitely yes, but just as important (if not more) is learning how to use these new tools once you get them. Read up on some recording techniques. Once you combine that with your new gear, you can be amazed.

u can never get good quality sound from those equipment.

Well at least for the hissing your stuck. The bass coming through is more likely you trying to mic the sound hole. Experiment with where you place the mic. You'll get a lower volume (read more hiss) but at least it won't be hissy AND boomy! ;)

noise

I upgraded to an echo mia sound card from soundblaster live, with a good mxl 603 mic, and an art tube mp. Terrible hum noise recording vocals. Worse than with my soundblaster live. So my advice is, because I'm stuck with all this equipment, and not knowing how to get rid of the hiss in the vocal track, other than with sound editors, do lots of homework before you buy anything. Maybe it would be worth the extra money, to have someone install the soundcard for you, try it on the spot, and check for that hiss, or hum. That way there, if its not noisy, you buy, if not, you try something else. As far as the sound quality goes, I think there is a little bit of overall quality on the final mix, but not worth the sound card price I paid. I'd check out more expensive cards. Mine was priced at about $250 Cdn
