when i record i get a lot of background noise, it doesnt sound professional, can someone tell me how to ge rid of that noise. I was told to use a noise gate, or sound gate, but i dont know how that works, can someone tell me.

Thank you

is it on the entire mix? maybe you are using a bad noise/music signal...

You can use gates on individual instruments. You can regard it as the opposite of a compressor: You can set a noise floor: everything below that floor is reduced to O. When there is a signal that is above that floor, the gate will open and you will hear the signal. You can also set other factors like the speed the gate will open and close. Gates can be good to help Basdrums, snares and toms a bit punchier, and to clean up distorion parts.
