I'm pretty new to home recording, although I've been interested in it for a long time. Anyway, I recently bought my first 4-track, the 424 MK3, and for the most part, I am very happy with it. But I've started to realize how noisy the rhythm guitar tracks are. The bass can be noisy too, but most of it comes when i record rhythm guitar tracks. My channel fader and master faders are both in the shaded area, and my meters are peaking at about -3 (I don't know exactly where the meters should be peaking, so that info would be helpful too). I'm using only TDK SA60 high bias tape and i'm recording with an SM-57 micing my amp. Is this noise just tape hiss, or somthing more. I appreciate any responses.

Hey! guitar kid
Check your dbx noise reduction switch if you suspect tape hiss.
If you don't know whare the meters should be peaking?? sounds like time to reread the manual if ya have one.?

Try pluggin your ax stright into the board and see what ya get.

Thanks for the response, but I played it back and found out the meter levels were to low.

Perhaps: keep your microphone away from amy power outlet or powerbar as it will pick up a lot of electrical hum and noise.

Also it depends the level you have your pre amps trim set to. whether it is set to )db gain for line level or anywhere up higher for mic levels.

Just need to turn up the heat. I let my meters peat at about +6. You want to saturate the tape. Too hot and it will cause distortion, too low and all you get is hiss. With a little time you'll figure out a sweet spot for your particular deck. Have fun!
