Noise Floor.

What is noise floor? Dragon mentioned something about it in the $30 vs. $600 card issue.
 
Simple...when you're just sitting there with no input plugged in and you record a WAV file, what does your audio editor or VU meter tell you is the dB rating of the resultant sound of "nothing"? If it's a good sound card, it will be much closer to really nothing than if it's a cheap one.
 
How about some more direct comparisons? I couldn't really tell until I got some software with a decent V/U meter, but the Gina floor generally comes in at ~ -50dB when I use the soundcard to add some boost to the signal, and the TASCAM Portastudio as my mic pre. If I'm recording direct from my synth
I can get >10dB better than that. What sort of values are obtainable with equipment on either side of this card?
