Hey fellas!
This is one of my tracks of an album I just finished recording in my studio. Mixed, produced, mastered, written, played, recorded... you know the deal, I did it all and want some opinions. It was just me, the instruments, the gear, and my dog in the middle of the woods for a week.

It's not perfect, but I'm pretty proud of the outcome nonetheless. This is the first full length album I've recorded. I wrote 14 songs for it, getting ready to get it printed and trying to sell it around town to make a few extra dollars. Comments welcome!

Shrunk it down to 128kbps just for file size purposes though so there is a bit of loss of quality but not too bad

I liked the song. I like your singing voice. I liked the instrumentation.

The banjo has a ton of reverb compared to the rest of the tracks. Sounds like it's in a different place from everything else.

The timing on the drums is usually OK, but not always spot on.

Bass might be just a little too loud and a little too heavy on the low end for a song like this.

Harmonica gets just the slightest bit shrill on the higher notes.

Good ear on ya TripleM! Appreciate the feedback. The drums is the only thing I really don't know how to play. This is the first time I've tracked drums myself, I know they're not perfect, but drums are pretty hard to master.

Any suggestions on mixing ideas for the harmonica though? I've got some multiband compression on it, but that's about it.. too loud?

On the harmonica, I'd ask: What purpose is the MB compression serving?

It's just a bit harsh. If it were me, I'd take out just a bit somewhere between 2700hz - 3200hz with an EQ. A real narrow notch, maybe 3-4dbs. And I doubt I'd be using a MB compressor.

Love the sparse arrangement, like your voice. The pace and feel of the song suit the title. I'm getting some stick over my drums at the moment, I wish I could get your snare sound. The bass sounds a bit off to me at 1:11 - 1:15, 2:40 - 2:45 unless I'm missing the relation to the chord on the banjo. Good. How do you mic and track your drums?

I was using a drum kit from Apex. Thinking about investing is some better mics for the drums though because they are lower end but they do give a decent sound. The snare and toms just clip right on, and I've got a few stands for micing symbols and the bass/kick mic, with a hole cut out and it stuck right in the middle.

I tracked it all just using a regular old mixer. The levels aren't adjustable that way though because it's all on one track... I've been reading up about multi tracking mixers that will allow you to throw each mic on a different track in the software. That'll be my next investment so I can adjust all the mics individually after recorded.

That's a pretty good drum sound then, you have to get it right in the mixer, not much you can do once it's tracked.

Yeah that's just it. It took me a couple hours to get the right sound of the drums when I first started recording for this album. Then I just left the mixer untouched for the entire recording session. The drums are consistant on each track that way.

Eventually as I mentioned, I'm getting a board that doesn't run through a soundcard, and a usb or firewire instead so I can track each mic seperately. That'll make things SO much easier
