No sound from Midi Clips

Sooo, this will probably be a newbie question but it has been annoying me for a while, despite going through many Ableton tutorials!
When I take say a Kit-Core (or any other Midi clip) from the browser and place it into Session view (or anywhere else), I then attempt to use my keyboard to play the different sounds to try and hear what the sounds are before notating anything. SOMETIMES, this works and I can hear the sounds, and play along on my keyboard, and other times I hear no sound... Although I can see that the keys are still being picked up by ableton by the flashing receives on the All Ins.
This problem has frustrated me for a long time, and has definitely stunted my learning, as I would love to just be able to experiment before I actually write anything out, or actually having to click on the keys to hear the sound.

P.S. After watching one tutorial it was mentioned that the Arm Session Recording has to be on... This helps sometimes, but not always...
Looking forward to some advice!
Cheers,
Timbuktu.

Don't know if this is moot but..

In XP the synth "slider" in Sound Control used to randomly drop to zero. Might be a similar problem?

Dave.

I once loaded a midi file into a Reaper, loaded up a VST and . . . no sound.

It took me a while to figure out why . . . but it turned out that the midi file's notes were all set to channel 15. When I set them to Channel 1, all was good.

This is not exactly your situation, but looking at the channel settings is an area worth exploring.
