I listened to a bunch of decent condenser mics Friday night. The mics I listened to were:

Studio Projects T3 & the new Joe Meeks JM47
ADK Vienna & Hamburg
MXL V67, V6, V69ME, & 960
Neumann TLM103

They were all pretty good mics, with different strengths and weaknesses. Some were very bottom heavy, some were a little bright to very bright, some sounded a bit hollow at certain frequencies, but all would be pretty useful - on the right voices or the right instruments.

The TLM103 was our sorta standard, but our main comparisons were from mic to mic, and what each mic might be good for. This wasn't about "which mic suck and which mic rules". It was about: could we use any of these mics, and what would we use it for?

These are typical studio buying decisions. Would this mic be used often enough to justify buying it? Do we already have something pretty close to it?

The tests were very informal and I'll be posting some observations in the next couple of days after I collect all our notes.

Thanks.

I was looking at the new Joe Meeks JM47 but wanted an unbiased review first.

I'm interested in hearing about the T3...I would like to pick up a multi-pattern mic, and this and the 4050 fit in my budget and seem to be high up there on people's lists...

Any other good suggestions other than these two for a multipattern LDC under 500 used Harvery?

Jacob

personally, i'm very interested in hearing about the V69 and 960.....specifically in how they might "stack up" to the V77.

thanks, harvey--as always, "you da man". :D

...thanks Harvey...looking forward to your findings...

I'm especially interested in your findings on the T3. I'm considering adding this one to my collection.

As always,

This thread is such a tease! Harvey...please update when you have time!

Sorry, I had a 10 hour block session today. I'll try to go thru our notes and post tomorrow.

Well, I found my notes, but it's been so long, I can't make sense of them. All the SP mics were pretty good, but the T3 was outstanding; in fact, we bought one for the studio last year, and Alex uses it constantly for vocals, guitars, flutes, and lots of other stuff. It's VERY different from all the other SP mics and has a hi end sheen that's amazing. Much like the old AKG C12 or Telefunken ELA M251. The C1 was slightly scooped in the mids as I recall.

Just noticed this was an '05 post. :D

That's ok though, cuz when Harvey speaks

I listen. :)

What?

No Radioshack, Behringer, Nady or Sampson?

You call that a mic shootout?

:D

Harvey already said he could make an album with a couple of $39 Nady CM-100's and I believe he said he used one of Berhingers mics on upright bass on a project with very good results.

High praise for the SP T3 ! I may have to check one out !!

I used a SP C3 with a Focusrite Platinum series pre the other day on a female vocal and it nearly blew my socks off !
