No Phase reverse... what do i do?

I want to put 2 mics on the snare drum so i can blend the two as needed. But i always get phase problems and my daw(ableton live) doesnt have a phase button. Is there any alternative to the phase button that i can use?

some programs call it "invert"

look for that. If you still don't have that...you can try a reversed polarity cable cable (assuming you can solder)
or just shift the track manually...even easier.

If Ableton Live supports plugins, I'm sure there are plenty of free ones that will inverse the polarity.

yup...very easy as well. Just makes sure you label the phase reverse cable tho so you remember what's reversed and what's not. lol

I have one that I made and it's 1' long. I just add it to a regular cable when needed. It'd be pretty hard to mistake it for anything else. That said, it's still labeled...

how would this work? I understand how phase problems can be solved by time alignment, but this isn't a phase issue, its a polarity issue....

Even if you time aligned it to make up for the difference, when the snare is first struck (i'm talking microseconds time-scale) the top mics "sees" a rarefaction, and the bottom "sees" a compression..so they would be perfectly in time, but still polarity inversed..

Or am i missing the point here?

Nope, that's the big difference between polarity and phase. At least as I see them. Polarity is non-time dependent, phase is.

@guitarmagic: Albleton Live may not have an invert button on it's track displays, but I'd be really suprised if it didn't have an "invert" tool available via toolbar or drop menu selection.

I've been using the program for 3 years and havn't noticed any invert button. I'll take a look through all of the drop menus or else i'll have to make a cable. How would i go about doing this.

And for the record ableton has served me well for 3 years now and i consider it a real program. I'm not going to change programs because it doesnt have one button.

The invert option will more likely be in some sort of menu or audio process list.

The funny thing about this question is that I would have guessed that in a software environment it might actually be phase rather than polarity. I guess I have always just tied polarity to a physical reversing of the lines in the actual signal path. Technically, I would also imagine that polarity would also have to have some sort of time difference all be it very minimal. In the software case I guess I just assumed that the software calculated a +180 degree phase shift or something.

It both hardware and software it's easiest (and usually) accomplished by an actual polarity reversal. In hardware, it's simply flipping the leads. In software its simply multiplying the value by -1 - much easier than calculating a 180° phase change.

No theres no inverse button in ableton. I'll just make a couple of 1foot cables like someone suggested and use them as extentions. Thanks for the help.
