what do you guys think about no using any overheads while recording drums

57 on snare
D112 on kick
ATM 25 on toms

Fine if you don't like cymbals. Overheads also capture the sound of the whole kit, not just the cymbals, so I think you'll find it sounds a little sterile.

Yea, I take it you're not a big fan of cymbals or hi-hat, then? :D

Who needs 'em anyway?

Whatever floats you're boat. Could be interesting.

wow im a total retard ... i tottaly forgot

my actual plan was to do the mics i listed above and hang a AT 4040 over the center of the kit

if there is one thing ive completely learned from this board it is:

everyone is differant therefore everyones recordings will also be differant

what ever sounds good to me is what im doing

Every ones spelling is different as well.

Depending on your setup, you could back the mics off a couple inches and pick up some cymbals and ambience. I've had that work more than once.

Well, that would technically be an overhead. :D So then I guess your question was whether it would be okay to use one overhead instead of two (?)

Nothing wrong with that at all.

I was using my MXL 603s for a long time as overheads. First as a space pair, but then I started finding good positions with the XY technique. With this I just had a seperate mic on the kik and snare. It sounds good to an extent, but I don't really dig how my cymbals (Zildjian A Customs) are translating on them and how the toms (Premier Artist Birch) sound like cardboard boxes through the OHs. I now started mikin' each drum seperately with various dynmaics (57's, an Audix OM, Beta58a, and a D112 on kik) and I'm using one overhead (C1) now. I feel that I'm getting much better results with this than I was with the 603s as overheads.

Just my experience.
