No MIDI!?

I'm using an M-Audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard with my PC running Windows ME. When I first bought the card and brought it home, I installed it and let Windows setup the drivers. But now MIDI files won't play! My Roland XP-30, which I've been using to try to record on Cakewalk Home Studio version 2 isn't responding either, and I suspect it's because there's some sort of problem with my soundcard's MIDI. Can someone help me? I can't figure out why this soundcard is acting up! It doesn't seem like I'm missing drivers, but I don't know. I'm far from a computer expert.

What's your previous MIDI port/audio card?

I think you need to configure Cakewalk in order to use your new card. In Cakewalk, go Options --> MIDI Device, and make sure you select proper MIDI in/out port connected to your XP-30.

Thanks!

That's the thing. I did that already. I don't understand why it's not playing .mid files, either. I've reinstalled the drivers and nothing. It plays regular audio files (mp3, wav, etc.), though.

There's nothing on the computer to play the MIDI tracks unless you have a softsynth -- either a DXi (DirectX instrument) or a VSTi (VST instrument) plus the Cakewalk VST Adaptert. I thought HomeStudio is bundled with at least the Virtual Sound Canvas... unless you have an old version.

For the XP-30, you need at least one MIDI cable from the Audiophile's MIDI Out to the XP's MIDI In, plus the XP has to be set to receive MIDI messages, and you have to select the right MIDI device (the Audiophile's MIDI Out port) to route the MIDI data, and of course you have to have the audio output of the XP running through something so it can be heard -- an amp, headphones, whatever.

And, of course, to record MIDI messages generated by the XP when you play it, you need another MIDI cable from the XP's MIDI Out to the Audiphile's MIDI In.

Right, right. That's common sense. I have all of that set up correctly. Some MIDI files play, others don't. The keyboard icon on the system tray has two lights - left and right. The right light blinks (when I try to record or play certain MIDI files), but the left light doesn't. The XP-30 is set up right to transmit and receive MIDI messages, too.

I heard that the Audiophile comes with three separate sets of drivers. Does Windows only install one set? One set is supposedly for MIDI, I was told. I'm not sure whether I installed all three sets of drivers or only one. And what about the IRQ? Could that have anything to do with it?
