I've tried reinstalling the sound card, and removing and then reinstalling the Windows multimedia stuff in Add Remove/Windows Set-up. Actually I've tried these several times and 25 other things that I can't even remember now. No matter what I do I can't get a midi check box to appear in the W95 Mixer Recording Properties Devices field.

I've searched MS tech supportbut no help there. Anybody think I need to reinstall Windows 95? I wouldn't mind avoiding that.

I'm new at this (as you may have guessed) and have an Ensoniq Audiopci card and Power Tracks Pro Audio. The latter allows you to record midi as wav but instructions assume that midi is available as a recording source.

Sorry to bug you folks with this tedious question but I'd sure appreciate some advice.

Thanks,

Jeff

What software (as in installation programs for MIDI drivers) came with the Ensoniq card?
Does it have a MIDI port on the card? With that card name, I'd definitely check that out. My Gina has zero MIDI capability. No MIDI ports, no synth, both of which are standard on really cheapo soundcards.
And I'd hold off on the Win95 re-install until you've absolutely run out of options.

Its a Creative Ensonic AudioPCI (CT4811) card I just bought. I checked both Ensonic and Ceetaive Lab's web sites and it looks like the installation program has the more recent drivers.

I suspect that over the years I have really fouled up this old P133. I'd like to get a bigger, better hard drive with a new install of W98. That might do it, right?

Well, anyway, I sure appreciate your advice.

Oh yeah . . .

It has a midi port thru the joystick. Device Manager in System Properties shows drivers for internal synth and external midi port. It also has some kind of Legacy Synth something for dos programs.

I'm thinking there's some crazy things happening in the system.ini file but I don't know enough about computers to consider editing it.

Problem solved. It turns out that recording from the Ensoniq AudiPCI is enabled by checking a box called "mixed output' in W95 Recording Properties. I wonder why they call it that? They use the term 'synthesizer' in the playback properties.

Ah well, thanks drstawl. I appreciate you're taking the time to respond.
