Here are two recordings i did of a cover band. One is of Smells like Teen Spirit and the other is You Really Got Me. I'm not in the band so im not really looking for musical critiques but im more or less just looking for more advice on how to make the recordings and mixing and everything better.

Smells Like Teen Spirit

You Really Got Me

I had to listen to You Really Got Me - I like the original version and wanted to hear what the take was like.

The guitars are dirty and crispy - not VH but they have their merits.

The back up vocals on the chorus are kinda blah - maybe double/triple up and pan l/r with some harmonies and big verb.

I like the reverb on the main vocals though - bit like DLR version.

Chucka Chucka guitar at 1:35 is good - a bit drier and in your face.

Edit - loved the drums.

Short and sweet, Nice mixing..... :D

Nirvana - also a good mix, your creative side comes out in the vocals.

Vocals need to be levelled more - they're jumping out all over the chorus. Maybe more compressed....

Guitars might be a bit low in the mix......

Another excellent drum mix - really stands out.....

Like the sound of this more than the other one - more body to it....

thanks dude for all the help, do you have any ideas on how to steady out the vocal levels, as far as compression and everything goes. I'm using adobe audition 1.5 right now because until i can afford a better computer thats about all i can run.

I don't know anything about Adobe Audition but I hear it is a very good piece of software for music. If you have the vocals on a separate track, I'm pretty sure you can apply compression to it using a either a feature within Audition or via a plug-in that you can add to Audition. Most music software has that feature but the vocals would have to be on a separate track to apply it just to that part of the song.

If the vocals are not on a separate track, you can try a multiband compressor to compress the whole 2-track mix. Just experiment to see if you can smooth out the peaks in the vocals.....

:D  :D

the vocals are on their own track but what do you mean by a multiband compressor?
