Hey all, I'm getting ready to buy my next preamp. This pre will be paired with a TLM-103 and used only for coutry-ish vocals. At this time I don't have a good outboard compressor so I was leaning toward a mercenary ed. avalon 737. I have heard although its not the best it's weaknesses matched with the weaknesses of the 103 match up quite well and compliment each other nicely.

On the other hand, I've heard great things about the Hardy m-1 and mp-1nv. They will be used for vocals only.

Help?

Looking for a channel strip? What's your budget? What kind of music? Just one channel? No eq? No limiter? No expander? No de esser?

Not necessarily looking for a channel strip but have heard the avalon matches well with the 103. Music style is strictly southern gospel. No limiter, no de-esser, no eq all this has been done via daw. Yeh, one channel would be sufficient right now. As far as budget, I'm budgeting around $1700

Normally, I do not liek the Avalon 737 a whole lot, at least not for what it costs. Honestly though, given your needs and current gear and application, it sounds to me like the 737 may be exactly what you need. In fact, to go with a TLM103 for the type of vocal you are talking about, it would be my first choice pretty easily over a Great River or a Hardy. For most mics and applications though it would not. There is definately something magic about how a Neumann sits with the Avalon 737.
