i have a mexican fender strat that is my first good guitar and i got it about 2 years ago. i want a new electric guitar that is more metal oriented and has great action, what are your recommendations?
I have a BC Rich NJ Strat. It does everything I ask of it, blues, punk, even the soft stuff, and is especially good on metal riffs. The action is perfect. I got mine for 700$ You could probably get a better price on a beatin up one from a pawn shop. They are durable as hell too. Mines been thrown across a stage. Thrown into a cement wall, and god knows what else I did when I was too drunk too remember Anyway its a kickass guitar
How much you want to spend - and is there anything more specific you want?
Floating/fixed bridge? Weight considerations? Pup configuation? Is there an image your going for - or does the look not matter? Who are your favorite guitarists (regarding tone and sound).
Ibanez, Dean, Schecter, BC Rich, Epiphone, Les Paul, Fender (and many more) all make guitars with low action that 'could' be used for metal.
Thanks for the replies. I am looking at guitars that are about 700-1000 new but I will most likely get one used. I would prefer a floating bridge. As far as looks I am looking for something kinda far out like a randy rhoads or maybe more badass looking strat-style guitar like a jackson soloist. Tone wise I like Petrucci, Dimebag, EVH, Jason Becker, Slash, Clapton, and Hendrix(I am looking more of the tone of the first 5 but having tone for the last 2 would certainly be a bonus)
The Ibanez S or RG series both have excellent instruments in that price range with the features you specified. The pickups may leave something to be desired, in which case a high output DiMarzio will give you the kind of sound you're looking for.
Dean, Washburn, Schecter, ESP, and Jackson all make guitars that don't have a traditional shape and conform to your specs.
EDIT: Aw crap, I didn't mean to go past 999 posts. Dammit.
You might want to look for an HM strat, they are getting harder to find but they are extremely versatile guitars (metal, blues, jazz) stock they can give you quite a few tonal varieties, the only mods I did on mine were replacing the neck PU with a Duncan lil59 to get the LP sort of tones..and scalloping the neck. They are very similar to the Jackson soloist with the wide radius necks, but definately have a bit more character in their tone . The last one I saw for sale was around 400$ (I'm still kicking myself for not getting it)
If you already have a strat, get something that is set neck with humbuckers like a Les Paul/SG or one of its many variants. You can always go back and hot rod the Strat and turn it into an Ibanez.
You just missed my Ernie Ball Music Man John P sell off. I have a JPM-MM 7 stringer that fits the bill as you've described, I also very much like the sound and feel of the Peavey Wolfgangs. You can still find these on Ebay pretty regularly.
