I have quite a few GLS ES-57s (6) and ES-58s (3). To me they are fine mics and I get a good sound with them. I a/b'd them with th Shures and they are very close. I use them on toms, snare and guitar.
 
Just buy a freakin' SM57.

Or even better, get a Sennheiser e-609s
 
I use the Sennheiser E835s and E845s and for both live stuff and recording they proved to be more effective and versatile than my 57s and 58s. So I sold all of them except for my old USA-made 545D which still kicks on cabs and the very occasional vocalist. My experience over the last few years is that the Sennheisers break less often, and never get the ubiquitous dents in the basket that plague SM58s.

Between an E835, a Shure 545 and a Beyer M400, you could be covered for 90% of cabs and a hell of a lot of singers too. You can even get the odd usable acoustic track if it's not a crucial one.

The Sennheisers have the intelligibility in the high end that the Shures have never had ... if you want it duller, knock out some highs. Otherwise I don't hear any reason to carry on with 57s and 58s, and an awful lot of people round my area are making that decision too.

Not everyone can afford a 57. As cheap as they are to some of us, $90 bucks is alot for some people. I can't vouch for the ES-57, but it seems everything I've read from people who own or have tried them is positive, and at a third the price if I were on a budget it would be a no brainer, in fact I'm not on a budget and I might pick one up.

Ps. I own many high end mics and my all around fav is a $79 (now they are $99) SP B-1. I don't care about price or name brand, I use what sounds best to me, sometimes it's a name brand and sometimes it's not.

No excuse. 57's can be had for very cheap in the used market.
 
There are quite a few guru's on this board who don't even LIKE the SM-57. Do a search. Its not the "end all - be all" dynamic.

A used 57 for around $65.00 on average (ebay, look it up) plus $10.00-$15.00 shipping is an option for some although not a slammer of a deal by any stretch when you can get one new local for a few bucks more. Not to mention you never know what you are getting when you buy used. For someone on a budget paying $36.00 (with shipping) for essentially the same mic with warranty and full money back guarantee (for any reason) seems to be anything but an excuse. I don't blame you for being hard headed, some have their mind made up .. and others have an open-mind ;)
 
I have 3 ES-57s... I don't know how they compare to the real thing though.
 
Since condensor mics are so inexpensive these days, I wonder if it's worth it to get a Shure Dynamic Mic. Could someone comment on this ? Thanks.

Dynamic mics are useful for all sorts of things. Drums/percussion, live music, guitar amps, recording in acoustically untreated rooms, etc. You will always find a use for a good dynamic.
 
I recently purchaced both the GLS 57 and 58 for live sound work and was very impressed with them both. Although I had no real Shures to do an A/B comparison, I did compare them with a few other so called Shure knockoffs I had laying around and can say I liked the GLS's much better. Shop the used market if you will, but I dont think a budget buyer could possibly go wrong with the GLS's. Also another SM58 knockoff I was suprisingly impressed by was the Behringer 8500 which is available for only $20 at musiciansfriend. (it got great reviews too)
 
Yep. If you plan on doing any amount of live music, you will need a tough mic. Condensers are fragile - some are exceptionally fragile. An SM58 is not fragile. You will also need something that is not temperamental in an uncontrolled sound environment. Again, the SM57 / 58 fits the bill. Condensers don't sound very good at all if you have a hard time controlling them.

It gets down to understanding the right tool for the job. Want lots of gain before feedback? Better learn about dynamic mics.

I needed to get s atable of mics and couldn't afford an armload of 58s. So I mixed and matched with some package mic deals, including a set of AKGs that are hypercardioid. I needed something pretty cheap that would not toss feedback at me on stage. I got that and the mics are certainly worth the money. But I've started using them side by side with 58s in a band setting and I'm beginning to understand where all the mud has been coming from. So I'm angling to get some 58s after all...

Did I save money? Not really. Did I ramp up without a budget? Yep. Are my mics meeting my needs now? Not by a long shot.

If you're getting 6 or 8 mics at once, the dollars add up fast. If you're getting one or two for versatile stage use - spend the extra few bucks and get the real thing.
 
my bvuddy has bought the 3 pack of the behringer 58 knock off and i liked the sound. it had a cleared edge to it. it compared very well. i dont know how rugged it is but at the price its a steal.
 
Get an EV Cobalt CO4. They're half the cost of the SMs and make them sound like ass.

if you can't afford a 57 and you want to dabble in recording, sell your PC and cancel your internet access. with that money, buy a couple decent mics, you know what i'm saying? the 'net ain't helping that poor bastard out.
