What's aftertouch?

What's the weakneess if my keyboard doesn't have it?

Thanks!

Its an additional sensor on the keys that detects varrying pressure on a key AFTER you have hit it.

It lets you do things like add vibrato to a held note by pushing down harder on the key- or any other kind of modulation that the sound module can do.

It allows for MUCH more expressive playing possibilities- especially if you are trying to mimic real instruments like strings and whatnot.

I believe aftertouch allows for different timbres to be brought into the entire sound after key strike as well. Harder velocities after initial key strike and you'll hear something new come into the sound.

I'll have to go back to my synths now to verify... :)

The way I look at aftertouch is simply another level of expressiveness.

Thanx for asking mullin, I just got a Yamaha P70 for my daughter and it was the only one she'd have anything to do with after trying out some of the much more expensive keyboards because of the graded hammer standard which emulates a grand piano. She could feel it and once buddy at the music store learned me about it I could tell the difference too, but I never heard of aftertouch before.

The Girl is in grade 7 piano but still jams with us lowbrows once in a while.
