Alright i am just curious about what exactly shockmounts do, i am looking at buying a mic and it has the option of with and without shockmount and i have no clue what exactly it does so yeah can you guys help me out with that

It isolates the microphone from any jarring movements that may take place in the recording environment. Examples include - singing foot tappers, any drumming, acoustic guitar heel pounders, folk dancers, line dancers, folking line dancers, etc.....

the studio elephant falling over in the corner???

I once saw 400-ish line dancers at a festival I played!!!!!!!!!! that was so bloody strange to see

imagine the shocker you'd need for that

It eliminates vibrations going towards the mic. notice how the mic is suspended on the shockmounts.

:p :p or the mic coming to meet one's head as it inexplicably falls over :p :p

Mic stands will generally resonate or pass on vibrations, and though it may not be very noticable, a sensitive mic can pick up on these vibrations, a shock mount will basically prevent these vibrations from being picked by the mic.

If you don't have a shock mount your mic will pick up low frequency rumble from things like air conditioning, or trucks, or trains passing by.

Doubt you'll get much of that on carpet, but if you're on hardwood, definitely. Oh the other hand, with air conditioning, you're probably thoroughly screwed by the air noise. :D

Now footsteps... that's where a shock mount is a life saver. Only problem is that I can't find a shock mount that will hold my Nady RSM-2 ribbon mic, which is where handling noise and footsteps suck the most.... Internal shock mount, my *$#^%*....

I was thinking the same thing about my shiny box 23, atleast I track in the basement on carpet over concrete, not to much noise from someone walking on the floor down there.
