Hi everyone..

Im new to the forum. I hope someone can help me out... I have put together some equipment but cannot seem to record anything...

I have a the Audio Out ports on my Korg X5D Synth, Alesis Sr-16 Drum Machine and PC connected to a Behringer 4 channel mixer. I also plan on recording acoustic instruments via microphone (soon as I buy one)

On the Korg, I have MIDI Out and Midi In connected to the MIDI port on my Soundblaster Live 5.1. I have got the MIDI Thru on my Korg connected to the MIDI In on the SR-16.

On the PC I am running Cubase SX 3.1. I can hear everything ok, but cant record Midi. I have setup the Alesis and Korg in Device Setup. I start a new project, select a MIDI track and select the device e.g Alesis from the device list. I hit record ... and nothing..

I'll connect the Line Out from mixer to Line In of the PC and give that a go... If I understand it correctly, that will allow me to record what I hear as an audio track in Cubase - rather than Midi, is that right?

I have no idea what Im doing wrong.. Is there a setting Im missing, or have am connected incorrectly?

Any help gratefully recieved.

How are the inputs and outputs on the left side of the the screen routed (track control panel)? and this might be a stupid question but is the track armed (no offense)?

Hi,,
When you say armed. I assume you mean telling Cubase where to look for inputs and output for any given track.. When I try to record a Midi track, I select SB Live MIDI UART Port for IN - thats the only one there, and for OUT I select the said device e.g Korg or SR-16. The Sr-16 midi output is set to 1 so set the Cubase Midi Channel to 1 as well..

No when I say armed I mean there's, on the track controls, a M (mute) S (solo) and a record symbol (track armed) press the Rec symbol and then hit record... If it's still not recording then I can't really think of anything else...

I'm probably misunderstanding something in your set-up description but just in case, MIDI doesn't carry any audio that I'm aware of. You won't ever get sound from those midi outs. MIDI is just a command interface where one MIDI device can control another or be controlled by another. But you still need to use the audio outs of any device you're controlling in order to get sound from that device. The MIDI outs themselves do not contain any of that audio output.
For example .... if you used MIDI to control 4 keyboards to get all their sounds at one time while only playing one, you would still have to connect the audio outs of all 4 keyboards to get all 4 sounds.
